Overview
The Graduate Student Scholarships, supported by the Chinese Scholarship Council(CSC), are provided for prospective international students to study for Master or Doctoral Degrees in top universities in China thus to expand student exchanges and academic collaborations between Chinese Universities and their overseas partnership institutions.
China Agricultural University(CAU) is among the list of the top universities supported by CSC to directly recruit the scholarship students from the academic year of 2008.
I. Basic Information and Duration of the Scholarships Program
1. Up to 25 scholarship students will be accepted to China Agricultural University for the 2010-2011 academic year (normally the academic year in China starts from September).
2. The Graduate Student scholarships only support the students who apply to be fully registered as graduate students (Master or Doctoral students) in CAU.
3. Duration:
The duration of the scholarship for all programs is the same as the normal length of the specific graduate programs in CAU. (Please check the Catalog of graduate Programs for International Students of CAU in the appendix)
If the courses for doctoral and master degree students could not be conducted in English, applicants who are non-Chinese speakers are generally required to take Remedial Chinese language courses for 1 year before their major studies. The one-year Chinese language study is also covered by the scholarship.
Note: Duration for scholarship specified at the time of admission can NOT be extended in principle
II. Application
Applicants should submit written application materials directly to Office of International Relations in China Agricultural University. The deadline for the materials to arrive at CAU is before January 5, 2010 for the academic year starting from Fall, 2010.
III. Eligibility
1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good health.
2. Applicants are not studying in Chinese universities.
3. Education background and age limit:
- Applicants for master degree studies must have bachelor’s degree and be under the age of 35.
- Applicants for Doctoral degree studies must have master’s degree and be under the age of 40.
IV. Details of the Scholarship
Full scholarship:
- Exempt from registration fee, tuition fee, fee for laboratory experiment, fee for internship, fee for basic learning materials and accommodation on campus;
- Living allowance;
- One-off settlement subsidy after registration;
- Fee for outpatient medical service, Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Benefit Plan for International Students in China.
Note: 1) Costs of the laboratory experiment or internship that beyond the university’s arrangements should be afforded by the student himself.
2) Fee for basic learning materials covers the necessary learning materials prescribed by the host institution, and other materials shall be self afforded.
3) Monthly living allowance is paid to the students by the host institution at the following rates (CNY Yuan per month):
- Master degree students: CNY 1,700 Yuan
- Doctoral degree students: CNY 2,000 Yuan
Scholarship students shall get their monthly living allowance from the date of registration. New students who register before 15th (15th included) of the registration month will get the full amount of the living allowance of that month, and those who register after 15th will get half amount. The graduates will be given a living allowance for another 15 days after the graduation time set by the university. The allowance will be terminated from the next month after students suspend their studies, drop school or complete schooling from the university. Monthly living allowance covers school holidays. Scholarship students who do not get the monthly living allowance during holidays can get that upon return on campus. The allowance will be suspended for one month if students do not register on time without permission from the university in advance, leave for non-health reasons or are absent from the university over a month.
Students who have to suspend their studies because of serious diseases should go back to the home country and pay for the international trip by themselves. With the university’s approval, the scholarship status can be reserved for at most one year, and their living allowances will be suspended at the same time. The scholarship will be terminated for those who suspend their studies for other reasons.
4) New students will get one-off settlement subsidy upon arrival in China.
- CNY 1,000 Yuan for new students who will study in China up to six months
- CNY 1,500 Yuan for new students who will study in China for one academic year or more
5) Fee for outpatient medical service refers to the outpatient expense in the institution’s hospital or the hospitals appointed by the institution. The students should pay for a certain percentage of expense in accordance with the institution’s relevant regulations.
6) Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Benefit Plan for International Students in China is provided by MOE for the scholarship students in China against hospitalizing for serious diseases and accidental injuries. The institutions or the appointed medical assistance agency provide advancement service for insurance expenses, and claim for compensation with relevant payment receipts from the insurance company according to the stipulated insurance articles. The claim of individual student will not be accepted by the insurance company.
7) International travel expenses: self-afforded.
V. Application Materials
The applicants must fill in and provide the following materials truly and correctly (in duplicate).
1. The Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship (available at http://www.csc.edu.cn/uploads/forms/6-中国政府奖申请表.pdf), one original and one photocopy, in Chinese or in English.
2. Highest diploma (notarized photocopy). If applicants are still university students or already employed, they should also provide confirmation letters presented by their universities for enrollment status or by their companies for employment status. All documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with translations in Chinese or English.
3. Applicants for Master Degree are required to provide notarized copy of their undergraduate academic transcripts. Applicants for doctoral studies need to provide notarized copies of both their undergraduate and graduate academic transcripts. Transcripts written in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with translations in Chinese or English.
4. A photocopy of the passport and four recent ID photos (white background, 35mmŨ45mm in size)
5. A study or research plan written in Chinese or in English (no less than 800 words)
6. Two letters of recommendation from full professors or associate professors (in Chinese or English)
7. Published academic papers or other academic achievements (if applicable)
8. Photocopy of Foreigner Physical Examination Form (available at http://www.csc.edu.cn/uploads/forms/foreinphy.pdf) (provided by Chinese quarantine authority. Applicants are expected to keep the original copies to apply entry to China) filled in English or Chinese. The medical examinations must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid. The medical examination results will be valid for 6 months. All applicants are kindly requested to take this factor into consideration while determining the time to take the medical examination.
VI. Choices of Specialties
Please check the attached list of Catalog of graduate Programs for International Students of CAU(also available at : http://oir.cau.edu.cn/view_en/index4.php?id=29) . Applicants are encouraged to contact their prospective graduate study supervisors prior to application and are expected to enclose in their application package the relevant recommendation letters written by those supervisors.
VII. Languages of Instructions and teaching
Although most of the CAU professors and Supervisors can communicate in English, at the moment, most of the main courses are still instructed in Chinese. Thus the applicants with no command of Chinese are generally required to take Remedial Chinese language courses for 1 year in China before their major studies. The Chinese language study is also covered by the scholarship. If students take one-year Chinese language course, the duration of the scholarship will be extended for one year.

VIII. Approval and Notification
China Agricultural University will review all the application materials and then the materials will be submitted to China Scholarship Council for approval. The admission and scholarships will be given on the basis of the applicants’ competitiveness, academic competency.
Admission Notice, Visa Application From for Study In China(JW201) and other relevant documents, if accepted, will be sent out before June 15, 2010
IX. Other notices
1. According to CSC policies, all scholarship grantees must go through the Review of the Chinese Government Scholarship Status annually.
2. The duration of the Scholarship for Graduate Studies in China Agricultural University for International Students could not be extended if the applicants fail to finish the studies due to their personal reasons.
3. Scholarship students who have to suspend their studies because of serious illness should return to their home country for further treatment and rest. All the costs including round-trip ticket for the treatment back to home country will be paid by the students themselves. Once the illness-break is approved by CAU, their scholarship status will be reserved for one year at most, meantime, the monthly living allowance would be suspended during the period of illness break time. Scholarships of the students who suspend their studies for reasons other than illness will not be reserved.
Scholarship students’ affairs shall be managed according to relevant regulations of Chinese Government Scholarship. Students are not allowed to change their institutions. In principle, students are not permitted to change their academic programs, or the duration of study specified in the Admission Notice.
