USA: Distinguished Fellowship Opportunities at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Overview

Departmental Nomination Required

The Illinois Distinguished Fellowship program is intended to improve the ability of Urbana-Champaign departments to recruit exceptional applicants by providing funds to match or exceed multi-year financial aid packages offered by other institutions. Only students of the highest quality who represent extraordinary recruitment opportunities will receive these fellowships.

Terms and conditions: The fellowship provides $20,000 per 12-month year for three years and includes a waiver of full tuition, service fee, health service fee, AFMA fee, Library fee, as well as basic dental and vision coverage. In addition, the Fellow will receive partial payment of the graduate student health insurance fee per semester. Approximately twelve awards will be made given sufficient funding. Fellows have the option of deferring the final year of the fellowship for use in a subsequent year (the three years of support must be used within a five-year period).

Illinois Distinguished Fellows will be expected to carry a minimum of 12 hours in the fall and spring and four hours for one-eight week course during the summer. Concurrent assistantship support of up to 50% or supplemental fellowship support is permissible.

Eligibility: This program is for recruitment purposes; only students applying for first-time admission to a program that leads to a doctoral degree may be nominated. U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and international applicants are eligible to be nominated.

Nomination procedure: Departments are invited to nominate truly exceptional students by forwarding a Graduate College Fellowship/Grant Competition Nomination Form and a copy of each nominee's application for admission, including the statement of purpose, GRE or other admissions test scores, letters of reference, and transcripts.

Departments are expected to be proactive in recruiting these students and should include evidence of this by including in the dossier a copy of a letter offering admission and financial aid other than the Illinois Distinguished Fellowship. A letter should also be included from the department head or graduate program director explaining why this student is an extraordinary candidate and how his or her presence would enhance the program. Each department should rank its nominations.

Note: No more than three Illinois Distinguished Fellowships may be held in a department in any year. As part of the nomination process, departments must certify that they will cover the Illinois Distinguished Fellowship stipend ($20,000) for the full three years of the award period in cases where nominations result in accepted offers that take their departmental totals over the maximum of three allowed in any given year.

Department checklist: Submit four copies of the following items for each nomination to the Graduate College Fellowship Office, 204 Coble Hall, MC-322, by the deadline. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
