UK: The UK Environment Film Fellowships 2010

The UK Environment Film Fellowships have been awarded every year since 2005 to Indian environmental filmmakers, to create 12 minute impactful documentaries. Till date, 20 filmmakers have been awarded these fellowships.

Every year, a theme is decided and filmmakers are encouraged to submit proposals for films which depict originality in research work in terms of topical relevance to the theme.

Filmmakers identify and team-up with subject experts/ professionals/ institutions and work closely with them during the making of the film to ensure a well-researched and high quality film.

The purpose of UKEFF is to build capacity and encourage the environment filmmakers’ community in India. The films made by these filmmakers are important communication tools that drive awareness and action among viewers on the impacts and possible solutions for safeguarding the environment in India.

Full Fellowships

A total of four fellowships, two under each theme, will be awarded, through a countrywide bidding process, to a team of environmental filmmakers and climate change professionals or institutions; to make 12 minute documentaries on this year’s themes. These documentaries should inspire many more individuals and institutions to consider their own unique situation and make personal commitments towards initiatives that will lead to reduction in carbon emissions.

Eligibility

The fellowships are open to a joint team comprising a filmmaker and a Climate Change professional/ expert/ institution. The filmmaker will be the team leader and will be the primary contact person. The filmmaker will identify the Climate Change Expert/ Institution and the filmmaker will work closely with them during the making of the film.
The competition is open to Indian filmmakers only.
Applicants should have a working experience in filmmaking.
Proposals from young and upcoming filmmakers from across the country are encouraged, however past fellowship winners are not eligible to apply.
A filmmaker can submit more than one proposal based on any or both themes.
Filmmakers who have been awarded the fellowships in the past are not eligible to apply again

Selection Procedure

Applicants have to submit proposals based on the themes. A national jury of eminent experts will scan the submitted proposals and shortlist the most original and impactful proposals. The shortlisted filmmakers will be called for a detailed discussion on their submitted proposal. Based on the interview/ discussions, 4 filmmakers will be finally selected and awarded the fellowships. The 4 chosen filmmakers will then have to make documentaries on their chosen subject within the next 4 months (December 2009 – April 2010).
