Canada: Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Postdoctoral Fellowships at University of Alberta

Overview

Postdocs at the University of Alberta are supported by a variety of funding sources, whether it be their research supervisor's funding or funding the postdoc has personally obtained.

Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Postdoctoral Fellowships

+ provided annually from the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies + established through a bequest from the late Dorothy J Killam
+ valued at $46,000 per year for two years
+ available for most fields of study
+ number of fellowships awarded varies each year (4 for 2010-2011)
+ includes a one-time $4,000 travel/research grant
+ covers the cost of the University Postdoc Supplemental Health Insurance Plan
Note: PDFs are responsible for paying Alberta Health Care Premiums


Eligibility Requirements

-Open to citizens of any country
-Must have completed a doctoral degree (within 3 years post-PhD from the time of application submission to desired department) or will do so prior to commencing fellowship
-The doctoral degree obtained must be from a university other than the University of Alberta
-Must not hold a postdoc position or be employed at the University of Alberta at time of application submission to desired department
-Must not hold a faculty position at other universities or colleges at time of application submission to desired department
-Must not hold or have held a postdoctoral fellowship from any funding agency or a University named fellowship (eg CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC, AHFMR)
-Fellowships may be awarded in departments without doctoral programs, but only if facilities are adequate and doctoral calibre research is being carried out
-Killam Fellowship holders should be likely to contribute to the advancement of learning or to win distinction in their profession, should not be one-sided and a sound character should complement their intellect
-Fellowships are only tenable at the University of Alberta

Postdoctoral Fellowship Application

Prospective postdocs should first contact their department to determine if they should apply for Killam or Notley fellowship.

If the department recommends a fellowship application, follow the procedures outlined below.

Individual departments will pre-screen applications and forward the two top-ranked candidates for consideration by the Postdoctoral Fellowship Committee.


Note: December 1, 2009 is the deadline for prospective postdocs to submit all documents to departments.

Application Procedures

1.Complete a Postdoctoral Fellowship Application Form
2.Prepare a curriculum vitae

List refereed publications or conference proceedings, beginning with the most recent.
List publications in which you are author or co-author that are published, in press, and/or accepted for publication in refereed journals.
For papers in press, indicate the date of acceptance by the editor.
Begin each entry on a new line and state the full authorship, the year, the title, the name and volume of the journal, and the first and last page numbers. The authorship should be identical to that of the original publication.

3.Obtain official copies of all graduate academic transcripts.If you are submitting transcripts from a university outside North America you may submit certified copies of all documents (both mark sheets and degree certificates) that have been certified by a Department Head or the Registrar at the university, or by a notary public. All documents submitted must be in English, as well as the original language in which they were written. A certified translator, not yourself, must prepare the English version.

4.Arrange for three Letters of Appraisals from persons familiar with your academic work to be sent to the chair of the department.

All letters of appraisal must have original signatures. They should contain a substantive evaluation of your ability and not be merely testimonials, as the fellowships are intended primarily for those who are seeking to establish themselves in their chosen field.
Letters forwarded by a dossier service or career placement office will not be accepted.
Only have three appraisals sent. Any additional letters will be removed prior to competition.
5.Arrange a letter of support from the U of A research supervisor.
6.Submit a complete application package to the Chair of the department.


Fellowship Committee Adjudication & Selection

The Postdoctoral Fellows Offices convenes the Postdoctoral Fellowship Committee in mid-February to select fellowship recipients.

Letters of offer will be sent to successful applicants immediately following the selection meeting. The Postdoctoral Fellows Office will also send letters of regret to unsuccessful applicants.
Departments are notified of successful applicants by email.

Once a postdoc has accepted a fellowship, the Postdoctoral Fellows Office sets up the research allowance and administers payroll and benefits of the fellowship.

The Postdoctoral Fellows Office also administers renewals of fellowships.
