Germany: 2010 German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Artists-in-Berlin Program

Overview

The Artists-in-Berlin Residency Program (Berliner Künstlerprogramm) was initiated in 1963 by the Ford Foundation. In 1965 it was taken over by the DAAD, which subsequently opened the DAAD Berlin office to administer it. The funds are provided by the Ministry Dof Foreign Affairs in Berlin and by the Berlin Senate. Each year, approximately 15 to 20 internationally known artists as well as qualified young sculptors, painters, writers and composers from abroad are invited to spend 12 months (6 months in exceptional cases) in Berlin. The grant for filmmakers is limited to a six month stay. Here they have the opportunity to continue their work undisturbed and to participate actively in the cultural life of the city.

The aim of this program is to promote the exchange of artists' experiences and concern for current cultural issues in other countries. Numerous internal meetings and event series are carried out in cooperation with local cultural institutions, including Hochschule der Künste, Akademie der Künste, Literarisches Colloquium, Literaturhaus, Hebbel-Theater, Berliner Festspiele, Künstlerhaus Bethanien Podewil, and other galleries, museums and exhibition halls, radio stations, and universities. The Berliner Künstlerprogramm endeavors to establish contacts with local artists and personalities involved in the city´s cultural life.
