Germany: Ghaemian Junior Scholar-in-Residence 2010

Overview

The Heidelberg Center for American Studies (HCA) invites applications for a full-year
Ghaemian Junior Scholar-in-Residence to be awarded to candidates at the level of assistant professor or associate professor.

The HCA is a central academic institution of the University of Heidelberg, encouraging higher education, promoting advanced research, and facilitating public debate. Ten disciplines provide the institutional framework of the HCA, manifesting a concentration of interdiscipli-nary expertise about the United States that is unique in Europe. These disciplines are Ameri-can literature, economics, geography, history, law, musicology, philosophy, political science, religious studies, and sociology.

Scope: Proposals in all specializations listed above are eligible. Cross-disciplinary proposals are also welcome, as are proposals concerned with U.S.-German or U.S.-European relations. The ultimate aim of the project should be a major piece of scholarly work that will take the form of a monograph or seminal article in a leading academic journal.

Eligibility: Candidates should be permanently based in the United States and must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. They must have completed their Ph.D. prior to September 30, 2007. The position does not require any German language proficiency.

Provisions: Owing to the generous assistance of The Ghaemian Foundation for the Arts and Sciences, the HCA is able to fund this residential fellowship with a stipend of 40,000 EUR (tax-exempt under German law). In addition, an office—equipped with a Windows-based desktop computer—will be made available to the Ghaemian Junior Fellow-in-Residence on a 24/7 basis. The HCA is located in the heart of historic Heidelberg, with easy access to the university’s main library, numerous departmental libraries, and a United Nations depository library at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law.

The fellow is expected to be in residence at the HCA during the entire term of award (September 1, 2010 – August 31, 2011). In the course of the fellowship, the fellow is also expected to teach one two-hour course as part of the HCA’s Master in American Studies (MAS) program. In addition, the fellow is encouraged to present her or his research in the colloquium of either the HCA’s MAS or Ph.D. program and/or in a more formal presentation to the public. Finally, the fellow is anticipated to participate in appropriate meetings organized by the HCA and immerse him- or herself in the daily life of the Center in order to foster a true community of scholars.

Application requirements: A complete application must include the following:

• Project proposal (not to exceed 10 pages, double spaced, using 12-point font)
• Timetable (indicating the progress the applicant anticipates to make while at the HCA and how this progress relates to the overall schedule of the project)
• Curriculum vitae
• Publications list (no more than 2 pages)
• Two letters of recommendation

Applications must be either postmarked or submitted via email by January 31, 2010.

Selection process: Applications will be assessed by an interdisciplinary panel of distinguished scholars. Candidates will be notified of the results of the selection process in March 2010.
