Japan: Postdoctoral Position Available at the University of Tokyo

Overview

Affiliation Department of Basic Science, University of Tokyo

Location Komaba 3-8-1, Meguro-ku, Tokyo 153-8902, Japan

Position Postdoctoral researcher funded by a grant from Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST)

Period The postdoctoral researcher should join our group in the period between December 1st 2009 through April 1st 2010. The appointment will be renewed for each year.

Research direction

Study of electron dynamics in semiconductor nano-structures (quantum wells and quantum dots) under illumination of terahertz (THz) radiation, and the development of ultra-highly sensitive terahertz (THz) detectors (CSIP: charge sensitive infrared phototransistors) exploiting semiconductor nano-structures. Particularly important among recent issues are (i) investigation of the coupling between surface plasmon polariton and a two-dimensional electron gas layer in single quantum wells and the resulting understanding of the quantum efficiency of THz photon detection, (ii) exploration of new schemes of longer-wavelength THz detection, and (iii) fabrication and operation of CSIP arrays, aiming at the application to space infrared telescopes and novel THz microscopes. The research is a repetition of the cycle of forming a concept, designing crystal structures, fabricating devices, carrying out measurements, and reforming the concept.

Underlying idea of the research is to exploit achievements of basic condensed matter physics for creating new technologies, and to apply the developed new technologies as a positive feedback for promoting the basic research.

Qualification Ph.D. Among qualified candidates, those with strong motivation for challenging new
research directions are most highly welcome. In addition, previous experience in one or more of the following areas would be a distinct advantage;

○ Low-temperature/low-noise electrical measurements of semiconductor transport or optics
○ THz or optical spectroscopy, with related techniques
○ Micro fabrication techniques via photolithography or electron beam lithography
