Switzerland: Ph.D. in International Studies with specialization in International History and Politics, The Graduate Institute [Geneva]

Overview

Each year the International History and Politics Section admits to its Ph. D. programme, a small number of accomplished candidates with good MA/DEA degrees from recognized institutions worldwide, who can provide convincing evidence of their ability to pursue an original and significant piece of research to a successful conclusion.

What the programme offers?

The Ph. D. programme of the section is a recognized and well established platform for advanced graduate research in international history and politics. With research and professional interests that are varied and versatile, the section’s faculty offers research supervision in a wide range of subjects. A notable feature of the programme is the opportunity it affords of simultaneously combining customized course-work with fast-track immersion in the research and collective life of the section through weekly doctoral seminars and other activities.

As early as the second semester doctoral students will present and discuss early versions of their thesis projects at these seminars. This means Ph. D. students can embark on their dissertation research in their very first year in the programme. They will also have the opportunity to return to the doctoral seminar to share and test their subsequent research.

Apart from formal research supervision from their thesis adviser, normally a professor of the section, doctoral students can expect wider intellectual support at all stages of their research. The entire programme, culminating in the presentation and defence of a doctoral thesis embodying an original and significant piece of research, is designed to take a maximum of four years.

Financial Aid/Jop Opportunities

Doctoral students are eligible for a number of scholarships (e.g. The Pierre du Bois Doctoral Scholarships in Current History Offered to Students from Latin America), teaching assistantships in the section, and research assistantships on individual projects. More info on fees & scholarships

Ph.D. Curriculum

All Ph. D. students will have to complete coursework amounting to 24 credits during their first year. This includes two semester-long classes that together count for 12 credits. The obligatory year-long doctoral seminar accounts for 12 credits. The section’s weekly doctoral seminar (Wednesdays, 18h15, CV 204) aims to develop sensitivity to substantive and methodological issues in international history and politics and foster a community of scholarship involving the section’s students and faculty. It is a forum for discussion of ongoing research by invited guest speakers, section faculty and academics holding visiting positions and short-term affiliations, and Ph. D. students at all levels. The doctoral seminar is open to all students of the section. It is obligatory for Ph. D. students in residence. In their second semester Ph. D. students will present and discuss a preliminary version of their thesis project at the doctoral seminar. This will be be elaborated into a formal thesis proposal, or mémoire préliminaire, by the third semester when it will have to be defended orally before a faculty committee.
