UK: BBSRC PhD Studentship in Computing at the University of Bradford

Overview

Applications are requested for a project jointly devised by Syngenta and the University of Bradford for a 4-year BBSRC Case PhD studentship based at the University of Bradford. This fully funded studentship provides a living allowance of £15,790+ for each year plus tuition fees. You will also be sponsored for travel and accommodation expenses for training and conference attendance relevant to the project. You will be expected to spend at least 6 months of the 4-year research studies with Syngenta Product Safety (based in Bracknell, Berkshire).

Project Title: Data and Model Governance with Applications in Predictive Toxicology

The increasing amount, diversity and complexity of stored data and predictive models call for new and flexible computational intelligence approaches. The main aim of this project is to explore data and model representation and processing issues towards governance of available data and generated models, with applications to mine and exploit toxicogenomic data. Knowledge discovery techniques applied to predictive models to mine data further will also be investigated. You will analyse meta-data schemas and propose a representation format for data and model integration and mining, study data and model storage solutions with multi-level user access and timestamp features and define case studies for data quality, data mining, and predictive model representation and storage. You will contribute as a member of an interdisciplinary team to the process of data curation, data mining and knowledge extraction from Syngenta Product Safety repositories.

The results of the project will be presented at relevant seminars and conferences, and published in the PhD thesis and peer-reviewed journals. Prospective candidates will need to have good Honours or Masters University degree in Computing, Chemoinformatics, Bioinformatics, Mathematics, or a related discipline. Excellent programming skills are essential; good background in at least one topic such as mathematics, statistics, information retrieval, or artificial intelligence is desirable.

Requirement

Applicants must have relevant connection with UK (usually established by residence) to fulfil the eligibility requirements for the funding. The studentship covers tuition fees at home/EU student level.

Expected registration: January 2010.
