Overview
For the first time this year, the British Embassy is seeking applications from talented Koreans who want to study at the University of Cambridge under a new Chevening Cambridge Scholarship jointly funded by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Cambridge Overseas Trust.
Number of scholarships
Two fully-funded scholarships are available for the academic year 2010-11. The scholarship will cover the full cost of one year of postgraduate study in the UK, including tuition fees, monthly stipend and return airfare.
The Chevening Cambridge Scholarship scheme aims to attract outstanding young people who are academically excellent and have the ambition to become leaders in their chosen fields. A typical successful candidate should demonstrate the potential to benefit from the scheme and use it to develop their career.
WHAT IS THE CHEVENING CAMBRIDGE SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME?
From October 2009 the scheme will fund candidates from the Republic of Korea to pursue postgraduate study at the University of Cambridge. Two scholarships are available and will fund one year of study for a Master’s programme in academic year 2010-11. The arrangement is unique to the Republic of Korea and is jointly funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Cambridge Overseas Trust.
WHAT COSTS DO THE SCHOLARSHIPS COVER?
Each scholarship will cover:
the University Composition Fee at the overseas rate
approved College fee
an annual stipend (set at the normal Chevening rate), sufficient to support a single student
one return economy flight between the Republic of Korea and the UK.
The scholarship will not contribute towards the cost of dependants, purchase of books, excess luggage or other items.
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
Applicants should:
normally have a 2:1 degree at university level (Korean equivalent: 3.8 out of 4.5 and 3.6 out of 4.3)
gain admission to the University of Cambridge in the normal way;
meet the minimum standard in English language required by the Board of Graduate Studies;
be a national of the Republic of Korea.
WHAT FIELDS OF STUDY ARE ACCEPTED?
Preference will be given to applicants who want to study for qualifications in the following fields:
African Studies
Asian and Middle Eastern Studies
Biotechnology
Business Administration
Chemical Engineering
Development Studies
Earth Sciences
Economics
Engineering
Finance
Geography
History
International Relations
Land Economy
Law, including Diploma in International Law
Management Studies
Nanoscience
Philosophy
Physics
Politics and International Studies
Sociology
However, we will consider other courses/subjects as the need arises.
DO I HAVE TO APPLY FOR ADMISSION TO THE UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE SEPARATELY?
Yes, you must apply for admission to the University of Cambridge in the normal way. Any offer of a scholarship is dependent on the candidate getting admission to a college (no restrictions) at the University of Cambridge. You must apply for admission to the University of Cambridge by 15 December 2009. Please visit the website of the University of Cambridge for more details.
Application
Application is through the normal route for a Chevening scholarship in Korea. You should visit the following page: Further Information for Applicants. Candidates should note that they are applying for the Chevening/Cambridge scheme on the application form, especially in the area of “Personal Statement”.
The deadline for application to Chevening Cambridge scholarships is 7 December 2009. The deadline for applying to the University of Cambridge is 15 December 2009.
Successful candidates at the first stage will be contacted individually in early February 2010
Submit your IELTS certificate (report form – Academic module only), and supporting documentation, listed in this page by 12 February 2010.
