UK: CSC International PhD Programme at MRC Clinical Sciences Centre

Overview

A PhD is one of the most exciting times in the life of a scientist and has a major influence on their future career. The MRC Clinical Sciences Centre as a place of excellent science and education provides competitive PhD training, offering a outstanding starting platform for a career as a research scientist.

At the CSC, more than 30 research groups are organized in to three sections: Epigenetics, Development and Cancer; Experimental and Clinical Neuroscience, and Genomic, Metabolic and Cardiovascular Medicine. The mix of clinical and basic biological sciences creates a stimulating and flexible environment facilitating a broad education. The 3.5 year research programme provides a comprehensive scientific training in a vibrant international research environment with state-of-the-art research facilities and cutting-edge research projects. Laboratory work is supplemented by seminars, group lab meetings, training courses and participation in conferences. The degree is awarded by Imperial College, an outstanding university, ranked 5th in the world in the Times Higher Education 2009 ranking. More than 60 students from all over the world are currently working at the CSC creating a young dynamic and international atmosphere.


How to Apply

Advertising for eight UK/EU-eligible and up to three International Studentships for October 2010 has now begun.

Closing date for application is 6th January 2010.

Shortlisted candidates will receive an invitation from 25th January to interviews which will be held for two days on the 4th and 5th February (students are required to attend on both days).

On the interview days, applicants will have ample time to meet several Group Heads at the CSC, first during a poster session and second during one-to-one meetings. Each student will also have a panel interview to assess their general academic background, which will involve discussion of a research article (sent to invited students 1 week prior to interview).

Offers will be made to students from the 11th February, and a response is expected by 20th February. Most PhDs will start in the following October, but exceptions may be possible.Applicants for MRC PhD Studentships should complete the application form. Funding

Each year we offer at least 8 UK and up to 2 International MRC Studentships to students on our PhD programme. Students are funded during their PhD with a non-taxable stipend of approximately £17,500.

Requirements & Eligibility

Candidates must hold or expect to gain a very good degree in a science subject (first or upper second class) from a UK university, or an equivalent qualification if obtained outside the UK, and hold a Masters Degree.

Candidates from prominent UK and international universities are particular encouraged to apply. Applicants without a Masters degree will be considered provided they have significant relevant experience.

In line with Imperial College policy, students whose native language is not English and who did not undertake their undergraduate course in English are expected to pass the language tests set by Imperial College as a demonstration of their proficiency in English.

Requirements for UK/EU-eligible MRC studentship:

A UK National living full-time in the UK for the last 3 years, or
A UK National who has lived abroad for some or all of the 3 years immediately prior to this application for the purposes of their own or their spouse's employment or education or the employment of their parents, or
A non-UK EU National ordinarily resident in the UK for the 3 years immediately prior to their application for postgraduate study.
Requirements for International MRC studentship:

Students from countries outside the UK are invited to apply for international studentships at the CSC. Candidates should hold a very good degree in a science subject.
