UK: Engineering Doctorate in Systems Architecting as an Organisational Change Project at University of Bristol

Overview

Thales has established a Systems Engineering and Architectures (SEA) organisation across its international Land & Joint Systems division, to improve its business effectiveness and coherence by the more rigorous application of systems architecting techniques, skills and methods. The different national elements of the division have adopted different approaches depending on local circumstances and expertise.

The integrating theme of this project is to consider the soft and hard systems aspects of this initiative as an organisational change project. Early tasks will focus on supporting the development of the newly established SEA-UK organisation and will include engaging with a wide range of stakeholders to understand their expectations and perceptions of the initiative, developing a benefits model, tracking of how the benefits are actually realised and expectations and perceptions develop over time, and using this information to guide the further development of the UK organisation. It is envisaged that once the methodology is established it will be extended across the international components of the SEA organisation including Europe, Australia and North America. The student will have the opportunity to develop hands-on systems architecting and management experience on a wide range of projects in an international context by participating in and helping to co-ordinate the work of the UK SEA organisation.

The EngD in Systems is a full-time, four-year programme, offering the experience of rigorous, leading-edge research within a business context. The EngD researcher will spend approximately 75% of his/her time on the research project, with the remaining time spent on taught courses covering systems and business-related topics. The researcher will be registered at the University of Bristol

Requirements

Candidates should have a minimum of an upper second (2:1) class honours degree (or equivalent) in a discipline relevant to the research. They should have strong interest in the project and be able to demonstrate an aptitude for undertaking this type of research. There will be a need to work on military projects, so applicants will be subject to appropriate defence vetting.

Scholarship Value

A tax-free EPSRC stipend (£14,800 for 2009/2010) will be available for the successful (and eligible) candidate, and will be enhanced by a minimum of £3,500 p.a. from Thales. Tuition fees will also be covered. Standard EPSRC studentship eligibility applies but non-eligible individuals are welcome to apply but must be able to find alternative funding arrangements.
