Overview
Research is at the heart of City University London. Following its success in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), City will again be investing in new researchers by offering a significant number of three-year, full-time doctoral research studentships for entry in October 2010.
University Research Studentships are available for conducting a doctoral research degree in any School of the University.
Each Studentship provides:
•An annual bursary of £14,500 (which will rise in line with inflation in subsequent years)
•A full tuition fee waiver
•A one-off allowance of £1,000. This may be used across the three-year period to cover the cost of attending conferences, purchasing equipment or some other activity in support of the research.
Continuation of the award after the first year is subject to confirmation from the relevant School of satisfactory progress by the student. Recipients will usually be expected to undertake some form of teaching support activity in their second and third years as part of the bursary arrangements, by agreement with the School concerned.
Eligibility
University Research Studentships are available to:
•Both UK/EU and overseas fee-paying students
•New applicants who will be studying full-time
•Candidates who wish to conduct research in ANY School in the University
Research proposals are assessed on their research excellence or demonstrable potential, and the quality of the research proposal. Potential research degree candidates are encouraged to discuss their proposal with the relevant staff member at the School to determine whether their research project can be accommodated.

Please note that while applications for research degrees at City can usually be made at any time of year, University Research Studentships are awarded only once a year.
How to apply
Complete and submit the 'Application for Research Degree Course’ form. Candidates wishing to be considered for a University Research Studentship should play close attention to Sections 3 and 6 of the form.
The next closing date is Monday 25 January 2010 (for studentships available from 1 October 2010). Candidates will be notified of the outcome by Friday 2 April 2010.
