USA: 2010 NCEEER Ed A. Hewett Policy Fellowship for PhD Positions

Overview

The Ed A. Hewett Policy Fellowship supports research on the countries of the Former Soviet Union or Southeastern Europe conducted by an individual scholar or researcher under the auspices of a U.S. government agency, embassy, or field office of a U.S. nongovernmental organization in these regions. The maximum award is $50,000. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents holding a Ph.D. in any discipline of the humanities and social sciences, with a concentration and considerable background in some aspect of the history, culture, politics, and economics of the countries of the FSU and CEE. U.S. citizens or permanent residents with comparable research experience who do not hold a Ph.D. will also be considered.

Placements

Placements may begin as early as October 1, 2010, and may last up to one year. Fellows will be required to submit to NCEEER mid-term and final progress reports and a short working paper based on the results of their research. Please note that NCEEER maintains right of first refusal for the publication in the journal Problems of Post-Communism for working papers that are produced as part of NCEEER fellowships


Submission of Applications

Before beginning the application process, please thoroughly read the application guidelines.
You have three options to submit your proposal (all applications will be given equal weight, regardless of submission method):

E-mail the application form and associated files as a single zipped attachment (.zip file) to apply@nceeer.org. Indicate "Hewett Application: [your last name]" in the subject line.

Mail your documents via the Postal Service to the address at the bottom of this page.

Application Components


All applications must include the following items:

Application form

A project proposal of no more than ten pages (double-spaced, 12-point font) describing the nature of the research to be conducted, including its relevance to contemporary concerns of U.S. policy-makers responsible for the formation of implementation of U.S. foreign policy toward one or more countries of the region

An estimated budget

A current Curriculum Vitae (CV), organized in chronological order and no longer than four pages.
A Human Subjects Review form, if relevant to your proposal An official letter of agreement from the agency or organization with which you will be affiliated

Two letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with your work and your proposal
