USA: Research Fellowship Program at The American Statistical Association (ASA) In Cooperation with the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)

Overview

The American Statistical Association (ASA), in cooperation with the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), created the ASA/NCHS Research Fellowship Program to bridge the gap between academic scholars and government health research programs. Fellows work to solve methodological problems and study analytic issues relevant to NCHS programs, data, and facilities.

Eligibility

Applicants should have a recognized research record and considerable expertise in their area of proposed research. Suggested Research Projects:

Confidentiality protection and related topics
Data linkage
Quality control, quality improvement and its measurement
Adjustment for nonresponse in sample surveys
Telephone or internet survey methods
Data collection in a changing health care system
Small-area estimation
Cognitive processes and question response
Data editing and imputation
Statistical computing
Sampling and estimation
Questionnaire design and measurement research
Human factors and usability research
Data mining


Application Process

Applicants must submit a detailed research proposal for competitive evaluation, including:

+ Curriculum vita
+ Names and addresses of three references
+ Two copies of a detailed research proposal, including:
Short, descriptive project title
+ Abstract summarizing the project (one half page or less)
Proposed project term (approximate dates)
+ Background information
+ Statement of relevant work accomplished by the applicant
+ Proposed research plan with evaluation of expected results
+ Statement citing the significance of the expected results to NCHS programs
+ Resource requirements (including salary, estimated relocation and travel expenses, and research support)

The Program Review Board will review the applications and choose the Fellows for the program. (The Program Review Board consists of representatives of ASA, NCHS, and academia. Applicants should electronically forward their proposal in one PDF file to

Important Dates
For fullest consideration, submit the application by November 30; however, applications will be accepted throughout the year until positions are filled.

Condition of appointment and benefits

All participants are reimbursed by NCHS through an Intergovernmental Personnel Agreement with their academic institutions. The stipend for the Fellow will be commensurate withcurrent faculty salary, plus moving expenses and travel allowance for the period of the fellowship. Fellows will conduct their research at NCHS, in Hyattsville, Maryland. Free parking is available onsite, and a metro subway station is nearby.
