Australian Postgraduate Research Award (Industry) at University of Sydney

Overview

Title: Australian Postgraduate Research Award (Industry) on optimised sensors for rapid, dry electro-physiological measurements

This scholarship is funded by an ARC Linkage-Projects grant and will provide support for 3 years on a full-time basis for a research project leading to a PhD. The objective of the research project is to develop electrodes for rapid electrophysiological recording, vital for the development of electrical diagnosis and monitoring systems in remote environments. The electrodes will be optimised in terms of materials, shape, size, number of contacts and depth for recording capability and mechanical strength. Materials of interest are nickel, gold, silver and carbon nanotubes. These electrodes will support a device, developed by the Partner Organisation, that farmers can operate to pregnancy test their herd. This will allow more improved management of herds by farmers. More timely management of cattle pregnancies and has been estimated to be worth over $100 million per year to the Australian beef industry. The electrodes will also have application in a range of health areas such as emergency medicine where electrodes need to be rapidly applied, e.g. heart attack and stroke.

Eligibility:

Applicants should have an Honours 1 or 2A degree in science or engineering. Experience/background in materials, physiology or electronics would be an advantage. Applicants are not restricted to Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or New Zealand citizens, however, the APAI does not cover any tuition fees payable by international students.

Amount awarded:

The scholarship stipend is $27,222 (tax exempt). All full time research students in the School of Electrical and Information Engineering are eligible for an additional Norman I Price Top-up award of $7000 per annum.

Application guide:

For further information, contact Dr Alistair McEwan (Phone: +61 2 93517256; E-mail: alistair.mcewan@sydney.edu.au).
