Leverhulme Trust PhD Scholarship in Historical Studies

Overview

The School of Historical Studies at the University of Leicester is proud of its longstanding reputation for historical research of international quality. Our teaching is rated "excellent" by the UK Quality Assurance Agency and 90% of our research was judged to be making an international impact in the last national Research Assessment Exercise (December 2008). Our particular research strengths are in Urban History, English Local History, Medieval History, Eighteenth-Century History, Financial and Economic History, American History, and Modern British and European History.

We are delighted to offer this studentship, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, to allow a new PhD researcher to join our research community from October 2011. The studentship will pay full-time University UK/EU tuition fees for three years and include an annual stipend at the standard Research Council rate.

Research Areas

This PhD is funded by the Leverhulme Trust as part of a wider project entitled ‘Automobility and the Urban Environment in Nagoya and Birmingham c.1955-1973’. The purpose of the PhD studentship is to expand expertise in the historical relationship between motor transport and the environment. The central focus of the PhD will be on the study of the car and planning in post-war Birmingham. Various primary sources will be consulted, with areas of enquiry including the following:

  • The evolving plans for road construction, including the Inner Ring Road
  • How ideas of transport and the car shaped planners’ views of Birmingham’s urban form
  • The development of expertise in traffic management within the city
  • Growing traffic restrictions and pedestrianisation in the city centre
  • Relations between planners, the City Council and local business interests

The successful student will be required to conduct research in Birmingham and London archives (travel and subsistence costs are provided by the Leverhulme Trust). The student will also be expected to collate and upload statistical data to the project website as well as present a paper in Nagoya, Japan in year 2 of their studies.

The successful student will be based within the Centre for Urban History, School of Historical Studies and will be supervised by Professor Simon Gunn (School of Historical Studies) and Dr Sue Townsend (School of History, University of Nottingham).

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have a good first degree (first class or good upper-second class) in history or a relevant discipline and a masters degree or an equivalent qualification. Applicants who are still completing their degree at the time of application must be able to show clear evidence that they will achieve these grades.

The studentship is open to suitable UK/EU and International (i.e., outside the EU) applicants. Please note though that the award covers tuition fees at the UK/EU rate only. International applicants (and those not eligible to pay UK/EU tuition fees) must demonstrate at the time of their application that they can fund the difference in tuition fee rates for the duration of the award.

The studentship is for full-time study only and applicants must be able to commence their studies in October 2011.

About the School of Historical Studies

The School of Historical Studies is one of the largest and most diverse Schools of Historical Studies in the United Kingdom with 33 members of academic staff and several members of research staff. It was established in 2003 as an amalgamation of the former departments of History and Economic & Social History. The School is rated excellent for teaching by TQA and in RAE 2008 50% of its output was judged at 4* and 3* standard. It teaches more than 1000 undergraduate students and has a large and thriving postgraduate and research community based in the Marc Fitch Historical Institute in Salisbury Road, about 10 minutes walk from the University's main campus, where specialist library resources, desk space, computers and a common room are available for postgraduate use.

The following internationally renowned research centres are based in the School: the Centre for Urban History, the Centre for English Local History and the Stanley Burton Centre for Holocaust Studies. Each Centre combines undergraduate and postgraduate teaching with an active research programme which typically includes research seminars, symposia, conferences and externally-funded projects. The School also has particular strengths in early modern social, political and cultural history; modern British and European history, modern American history, gender history and medieval history. In addition there are School seminars and the postgraduate-run New History Lab, so that in a typical session the School runs approximately six seminar series. Inter-disciplinary research is encouraged through the Centre for American Studies, the Medieval Research Centre and the Victorian Studies Centre. Amongst other major grants, the School currently hosts the major £1.37 million Leverhulme interdisciplinary project, The Impact of Diasporas on the Making of Britain: evidence, memories, inventions in collaboration with the Department of Genetics, the Schools of Archaeology and Ancient History, English and Management at Leicester, and the Institute for Name-Studies at the University of Nottingham.
