NATO Defense College Fellowship

Overview

The NATO Defense College currently offers five fellowships each year in the field of security policy research. The objective is to promote research and political consulting in areas of particular interest to the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC), to NATO's partners in the Partnership for Peace (PfP), to NATO's Mediterranean Dialogue (MD) partners and Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI) partners.

Since the programme's inception in 1993 and up until the end of 2010, the College has awarded a total of 69 fellowships.

Partnership for Peace (PfP) Fellowships

Two fellowships are made available each year for applicants from PfP countries. Each fellowship lasts four months and each fellow receives a stipend to cover his or her travel expenses and the costs of his or her stay in Rome while conducting research at the NDC. Applicants should be citizens of PfP countries, as specified in the Fellowship Terms and Conditions and the Application Form. They are invited to submit proposals in the area of Euro-Atlantic security, by completing and forwarding their Application Form to NDC Research Division. The full Terms and Conditions of the fellowship, as well as the Application Form, can be downloaded from this webpage.

Mediterranean Dialogue (MD) Fellowships

Two fellowships are also made available each year for applicants from MD countries. Each fellowship lasts four months and each fellow receives a stipend to cover his or her travel expenses and the costs of his or her stay in Rome while conducting research at the NDC. Applicants should be citizens of partner countries in the Mediterranean Dialogue, as specified in the Fellowship Terms and Conditions and the Application Form. They are invited to submit proposals relating to Mediterranean security, by completing and forwarding their Application Form to NDC Research Division. The full Terms and Conditions of the fellowship, as well as the Application Form, can be downloaded from this webpage.

Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI) Fellowships

One fellowship is made available each year for applicants from ICI countries. Also in this case, the fellowship lasts four months and each fellow receives a stipend to cover travel expenses and the cost of his / her stay in Rome. Applicants should be citizens of partner countries in the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative. They are invited to submit proposals relating to the Gulf Security, by completing and forwarding their Application Form to NDC Research Division. The full Terms and Conditions of the fellowship, as well as the Application Form, can be downloaded from this webpage.

Selection Procedure

The NDC Research Fellowship Selection Committee meets in the month of November each year, to review all the applications received. A staff member of NDC Research Division may even contact prospective candidates for further clarification of their applications before that date, but applicants should be aware that a final decision on their application will only be made at the Committee meeting in October. The Committee may select up to five candidates for fellowship positions in the following calendar year: two candidates from PfP, two from MD partner countries and one from ICI countries. Selected candidates will be notified in writing immediately thereafter and they will receive the latest version of the NDC Fellows' Manual to prepare themselves for their stay at the College in Rome. Due to the large number of applicants, only candidates selected for the Fellowships will be contacted.

Special Fellows and Fellowships

In completing the picture of fellows and fellowships at the NATO Defense College, a special category should be highlighted in the framework of the cooperation between NATO and the Russian Federation. In 2003 the NATO-Russia Council (NRC) decided to make two fellowships available each year for Russian citizens, for research specifically in the area of defence reform. Since the inception of the programme, four Russian military officers have conducted their research at the College.
