Erasmus Mundus (MAIPR) Scholarships

Overview

The Erasmus Mundus MA in International Performance Research (MAIPR) is aimed at students with a particular interest and/or background in the performing arts, therefore those who may wish to pursue a career in or add value to already existing skills in aspects of arts practice or pursue an academic career through advanced study, perhaps leading to a Ph.D.

The ideal candidate has a strong academic background and also experience with creative practice in theatre and/or performance. You may be in your final year of an undergraduate degree or have been working in a performance-related profession or area.

The current MAIPR intakes are truly international, made up of students from all continents (except Antartica!) We have students who have entered straight after finishing their undergraduate degrees in performance-related disciplines and others who have worked as directors, choreographers, curators, dancers and actors. You should bear in mind, however, that MAIPR is not a practical training programme. What it will do is help you develop and enhance your theoretical knowledge about performance-related issues, and it will certainly add value to your already existing skills base.

Funded by the European Commission, the MAIPR from autumn 2011 will be offered by four internationally renowned academic institutions: the University of Warwick in the UK; the Universiteit van Amsterdam (the University of Amsterdam) in The Netherlands; the Univerzitet Umetnosti u Beogradu (University of Arts Belgrade) in Serbia; and the Helsingin Yliopisto (the University of Helsinki) in Finland.

DegreeStudents successfully completing the programme will receive a double degree awarded by the Universities of Warwick, Amsterdam or Arts Belgrade. The Ideal Candidate: The MAIPR is aimed at students with a particular interest and/or background in the performing arts, therefore those who may wish to pursue a career in some aspect of arts practice or pursue an academic career through advanced study, perhaps leading to a Ph.D. The ideal candidate has a strong academic background and also some experience with creative practice in theatre and performance. You may still be studying for an undergraduate degree, or you may have been working in a performance-related profession or area.
Erasmus Mundus Scholarships

Erasmus Mundus (EM) Scholarships are funded by the European Commission (EC), under the management of the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA). EM scholarships are awarded to the strongest applicants to the MAIPR programme itself, in accordance with the rules and regulations set by the EACEA.

There are two EM scholarship competitions that are linked to the MAIPR programme itself: Category A and Category B. The competitions are open to MAIPR applicants only and are therefore not available to students applying for other programmes.

The following are the details on the two competitions. Please check carefully to see which competition applies to your own circumstances:

CATEGORY A: € 36 000 (2011-12 grants have now been allocated)

Category A scholarships are aimed at covering all the costs of the programme, therefore fees, travel and living expenses over 16 months:

  • 7 scholarships for eligible third-country applicants (therefore those whose nationality and place of abode are outside of the EU/EEA/EFTA area) who have lived, studied and/or worked for LESS THAN a cumulative period of 12 months within the EU/EEA/EFTA area as at 31 January 2011.
  • 1 additional scholarship is reserved for an eligible West Balkans and Turkish applicant who has lived, studied and/or worked for LESS THAN a cumulative period of 12 months within the EU/EEA/EFTA area as at 31 January 2011.

After the € 12 000 programme fee has been deducted from the EM scholarship, you will receive 24 000. This amount is made up as follows:

  • € 8 000 travel and installation allowance
  • € 16 000 monthly stipend

The above will usually be paid in 16 x monthly instalments of € 1 500. The first payment will be made shortly after arrival at your home university.

Details for 2012-13 will be uploaded later in 2011.

category B: € 17 000 (2011-12 grants have now been allocated).

  • Category B scholarships are considered as financial contributions rather than full scholarships:
  • 8 scholarships for eligible EU/EEA/EFTA applicants, also third-country applicants who have lived, studied and/or worked for MORE THAN a cumulative period of 12 months within the EU/EEA/EFTA area as at 31 January 2011.

After the programme fee has been deducted from the EM scholarship, an EU student will receive € 8 000 living allowance a €3 000 travel and installation allowance. This will be paid at a rate of €687.50.

Details for 2012-13 will be uploaded later in 2011.

EM Scholarship Competitions - entry: you do not apply separately for either of the EM scholarship competitions. Recommendations are made by the MAIPR consortium and are based solely on the quality of the application to the MAIPR programme itself. See the How to Apply webpage for more information.

EM scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. It is therefore important that your MAIPR application is as strong as possible as competition for the scholarships is very strong. You should also bear in mind that you may be accepted onto the MAIPR programme but not be awarded a scholarship. Remember: if your application for the 2012-13 MAIPR is received after the 3rd-January 2012 deadline or it is incomplete on that date, unfortunately we cannot enter you into the EM scholarship competition.

Application process

Online application: The best way to apply for the MAIPR programme is online via the University of Warwick, the coordinating institution for the Consortium. Please click-on the following link on-line application form to access the online portal.

To register your application and gain access to the form, all new applicants must enter a valid email and an easily remembered password. Make sure that you choose the correct course code: P-W4PA.

If you are unable to apply on-line, you can send in a paper application. You need to request the documentation from the University of Warwick's Student Recruitment department, via student.recruitment@warwick.ac.uk. If you choose this option, it is your responsibility to make sure that the completed application form and all the required support documents are sent to Postgraduate Admissions in enough time to arrive by the relevant MAIPR deadline. You must also include the application fee (see below).
Application fee: Postgraduate Admissions levy a non-refundable application handling fee for all taught postgraduate courses, including the MAIPR. For an online application it is £30; for a paper application it is £50. YOU MUST PAY THIS FEE. If you do not, your application will not be forwarded to us and therefore it will be rejected. We therefore strongly advise that you pay the feeat the same time as your application, otherwise the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies will be unable to consider you for the course. This can be paid on-line by credit or debit card, or through the post by a Banker's Draft made out to 'The University of Warwick'. If you do not have a card, you may ask someone else, for example a parent or partner, to pay on your behalf.
NOTE: All students must apply for the programme through the University of Warwick; you are unable to apply through the Universities of Amsterdam, Arts in Belgrade or Helsinki. However, while the application form is geared towards the University of Warwick, you are applying to all of the partner institutions when you submit the form.
The application for the 2012-13 MAIPR programme itself must have been submitted on-line or been received by the Warwick Postgraduate Admissions Office by the following date:
  • For 2012-13, the deadlines will be: 3rd January 2012 (for EM scholarship competition entrants) and 30th April 2012 for all other applicants
  • Certificate of Language test results: this is required for the majority of non-native English speakers (see below for exceptions). The following are the accepted exam boards and minimum results required for the MAIPR course:

- IELTS (British Council International Testing System) of at least 7.0;

- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) of at least 620 (paper based) or 260 (computer based) or 105 (internet-based iBT)
