Overview
VLIR-UOS Scholarships for students from developing countries to study Master of Nutrition and Rural Development,Main Subject: Human Nutrition at Universiteit Gent, Belgium. Ghent University is offering a 2-year Master program in Nutrition and Rural Development. The course provides an outline of all theoretical information and practical experience, directly and indirectly related to a better understanding of food and nutrition problems in the developing countries, their origin and solutions. The program includes lectures, research projects, Masters’ Test, case studies, discussions, seminars, demonstrations, lab work, exercises and visits. Admission requirements
All applicants should have completed and submitted an complete application file on econsort.ugent.be for the Master Program of Nutrition and Rural Development. This complete application file should be also send through regular mail to the secretariat of the program and this before the deadline.
Then, each received application file, if complete, will be firstly evaluated by the academic admission board of the program; then the academic proposed selection result has to be approved by the Faculty Council and by the Rector’s office. If the final answer at Rectorate level is positive, then the applicant will receive an official admission letter signed by the Rector of the University.
Nationality and place of residence
Only persons who are resident AND national of one of the following countries (not necessarily the same country for residence and nationality) are eligible for a VLIR-UOS scholarship. Please note that candidates must reside in one of these countries at the moment of application.

Latin America: Bolivia, Brasil, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay
Entry conditions
- Applicants should hold a university degree (min. B.Sc., preferentially of a 4 year-program) in a discipline related to the content of the course (nutrition, agriculture, medical sciences, chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, veterinary sciences, etc.) from a recognized university, college or institute.
- They should have obtained that Bachelor degree with good overall scores (at least a second class higher or equivalent).
- It is highly recommended that the participants have a few years’ practical experience in a developing country before they attend the course (not exclusive for academic admission).
- They should have followed during their Bachelor studies at least the following prerequisite courses: 1) mathematics and statistics 2) chemistry and physics; 3) Biochemistry and (human) physiology and 4) computer science.
- It is also highly recommended that during their higher studies they received a basic lab training.
- The applicants must be proficient in the language of the course, i.e. English. Command of the English language is a very important criterion for admission. With the exception of those who have a diploma (Secondary Education, Academic Bachelor Degree, Master Degree) issued by an institution officially recognized by the Flemish Government, and/or those who English is their mother tongue, applicants must be able to prove their proficiency in English through delivering one of the following 4 documents:
1. TOEFL certificate (the UGent TOEFL code is 2643) with:
• a minimum total score of 550 on the paper based test, or
• a minimum total score of 79 on an internet based test.
The test validity is max. 2 years and an official proof of this test should be send by the TOEFL organisation directly to the Ghent central student administration service.
2. IELTS certificate with a minimum overall band score of 6. The test validity is max. 2 years and also for this test an official proof should be send directly by IELTS to the Ghent Central student administration service.
3. Proof of at least 1 year of comprehensive English-based instruction at a university or recognized equivalent.
4. Proof of a successful “Intermediate Academic English” test at the Ghent University Language Center.
Remark: - TOEFL/IELTS predictive tests are not acceptable
- A Cambridge certificate can also be accepted if score is at least B2
Applicants who do not dispose of an official language proficiency proof before the official start of the academic year, can not take their inscription at UGent and if coming to Gent, Belgium, then they will be send back ASAP to their home country .

How to apply
You will need to follow the correct and complete procedure below:
1. Apply on the website via the application form of the Flemish host university: fill in name, birth date, country, etc…
2. Receive a return e-mail from the Flemish host university.
3. Send a printout of your application file along with all required documents (diploma transcripts, motivation, etc…) to the International Office of the host university (not to VLIR-UOS!).
Then you have correctly applied and can your application be considered. Scholarship application deadlines are: 1 February 2012
