Overview
CAF-Latin American Development Bank and the Latin American Centre, University of Oxford, invite applications for two scholarships to study for the MSc in Latin American Studies in 2012/13. The scholarships will cover both tuition fees as well as college fees for St Antony's College.
Scholarship Eligibility Criteria
1. Candidates should be applying for the MSc in Latin American Studies at the University of Oxford to start in 2012
2. Nationality: you must be a permanent resident and national of one of the following CAF shareholder countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay and Venezuela.
3. A vocation for public service, as evidenced by previous studies and work experience.
4. The intention to return to work in a role of public service in your country of origin following completion of the course in Oxford.
How To Apply
1. Complete the online application for the MSc in Latin American Studies at the University of Oxford. You should apply in the first or second applications round, deadlines as follows: Friday 18th November 2011 (round 1), Friday 20th January 2012 (round 2). You should specify St Antony's as your first choice of college and state in your application that you wish to be considered for a CAF-Oxford Scholarship.
2. Send a short email to administrator@lac.ox.ac.uk by the same deadline to state that you wish to be considered for a CAF-Oxford Scholarship.
Incomplete applications, or applications not submitted by one of the two deadlines will not be considered for CAF-LAC funding.

A PhD position/utbildningsbidrag in Quaternary Geology within the topic "Climate dynamics during the Eemian Interglacial (MIS 5e) in the North Atlantic region inferred from a unique sediment sequence at Sokli (northern Finland)" at the Department of Physical Geography and Quaternary Geology. The Department of Physical Geography and Quaternary Geology is one of the major departments within the Faculty of Science at Stockholm University. The department has approximately 120 employees and educates approximately 1500 students annually. The main research areas are “Climate, environment and landscape”, “Landscape analysis and geomatics”, “Glacier and polar environments” and “Land and water resources”. Education is oriented towards geography, biology-earth sciences, geosciences and environmental protection.
Project description
We seek to recruit a candidate for a PhD position in Quaternary Geology with emphasis on palaeo-environmental reconstruction. The PhD student to be appointed here will make a proxy-based climate reconstruction for the last interglacial period (Eemian or MIS 5e at around 120 kyr BP) by means of fossil and geobiochemical analyses on a for the North Atlantic region unique sediment sequence preserved at Sokli in northern Finland. The nine meters of Eemian lake sediments recently cored at Sokli allow for a reconstruction of climate at a decadal time-scale in a region where sediments pre-dating the Holocene have been very sparsely preserved. The project will focus on
1) the magnitude of warming at the peak of northern summer insolation at ~125 kyr,
3) the climate regime at the closing phase of the interglacial at ~115 kyr. The project involves fieldwork in northern Finland, extensive microscope work including the analysis of diatoms and a second biotic proxy (i.e. macrofossils or chironomids), an integration of biotic and abiotic proxy data, and publishing in scientific journals and a thesis. The candidate will conduct part of the fossil analyses abroad in close collaboration with specialists.
Qualifications
The candidate should either have obtained a MSc, or acquired a total of 240 higher education credits (of which at least 60 at advanced level), or acquired in some alternative fashion the equivalent knowledge in Earth Sciences or a related topic. Preference will be given to those with a background in Quaternary geology, ecology, limnology, chemistry, palaeo-climatology and diatom analysis. Experience with fieldwork, extensive laboratory (core sub-sampling and sample preparation) and microscope work (fossil analysis), multi-proxy analysis and team work are considered advantageous. Candidates should be self motivated, committed and enthusiastic about working in the laboratory and about conducting fieldwork in remote areas. The PhD dissertation will be written in English.
Terms of employment
The 4-year PhD program includes at least 3 years of research and at most one year of course work. The position may be extended by up to 1 year if up to 20 % teaching assistance or administration is included in the contract. The position is financed by a faculty studentship during the first 12 months, amounting to about 15.500 SEK per month during this period. Upon satisfactory progress, the PhD-student can apply for a PhD-employment from the second year with a salary currently starting at 22.600 SEK per month.

Liberal Arts Undergraduate Scholarships, King’s College London, UK
Overview
This undergraduate scholarship scheme is being launched in 2012 for students undertaking the new BA Liberal Arts at King’s College London.
The School of Arts & Humanities will be offering up to five Liberal Arts Scholarships of £15,000 each (£5,000 per annum) to those successfully applying for entry into the BA Liberal Arts in September 2012.
The scholarships are designed to offer assistance to outstanding candidates who are in need of extra financial support to undertake the degree.
Scholarships will therefore be awarded on the basis of:
- the strength of candidates’ applications, particularly their academic achievements and
- the applicant’s financial assessment
Scholarships are worth £15,000 each, payable over 3 years. This means that you will receive £5,000 in each of your three years of study (repeat years or breaks in study will not be funded), and will be dependent upon continued satisfactory academic progress and attendance.
Am I eligible to apply?
Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:
- you should be undertaking your first degree;
- you should be applying for the BA Liberal Arts undergraduate programme 2012 entry;
- you should have a household income of £42,600 or less (or international equivalent);
- if you are a Home/EU student, you should have applied for your maximum entitlement to UK government help with tuition fees and loans/grants for living costs support;
- if you are a Home student, you must have given Student Finance England ‘consent’ to share your financial information with the College;
- if you are an International student, you should demonstrate that you have applied for your maximum entitlement to help with tuition fees and living costs support from you home government.

University of Western Australia: International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS)
Overview Applications for international postgraduate research scholarships at UWA are rated according to the following criteria: (a) Academic achievement; (b) English language achievement; (c) Research training achievement; and (d) Proposed research environment. Allocation of scholarships is the outcome of a competitive ranking and selection process in which applications are scored and ranked by Schools, Faculties and the University Scholarships Committee, according to these common criteria and on the basis of evidence provided.
Applications are invited from suitably qualified international students for scholarships to undertake the degree of Master by Research or Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Western Australia. Application for a scholarship is also an application for admission to the University.
The purpose of the IPRS and the UWA SIRF scheme is to attract top quality international postgraduate students to areas in which the University has specialised research strengths and to support Australia's research effort. Successful applicants can expect to become members of a research team working under the direction of senior researchers and in an area which has attracted external resources.

Gates Cambridge Scholarships for International Students
Overview
Gates Cambridge Scholarships are highly competitive full-cost scholarships awarded to outstanding applicants from outside the UK to pursue a full-time graduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. The University of Cambridge is normally ranked in the top three universities worldwide. It typically receives over 9,000 applications for graduate study from non-British applicants, approximately 1,700 of whom take up their place at Cambridge.
Gates Cambridge Scholarships are awarded on the following criteria
- intellectual ability
- leadership capacity
- a person's desire to use their knowledge to contribute to society throughout the world by providing service to their communities and applying their talents and knowledge to improve the lives of others
- a good fit between the abilities and aspirations of the applicant and what the University of Cambridge can offer in its graduate programme
While at Cambridge Gates Scholars pursue the full range of academic disciplines and are spread throughout all 31 Colleges.
All applicants for the scholarship apply for – and must gain – admission to the University of Cambridge
Scholarship Value
A Gates Cambridge Scholarship covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge.
Core components
- the University Composition Fee and College fees at the appropriate rate*
- a maintenance allowance for a single student (£13, 000 for 12 months at the 2011-12 rate; pro rata for courses shorter then 12 months)
- one economy single airfare at both the beginning and end of the course
Discretionary components
The Trust considers applications for several types of additional funding on a discretionary basis:
- Family allowance - up to £7,775 for first child and up to £1,200 for second child; no funding for partner
- Conference attendance - up to £500 p.a (must be presenting)
- Fieldwork - Scholars may apply to keep up to their normal maintenance allowance while on fieldwork as part of their PhD
- Some fourth year funding for PhD Scholars - termly maintenance allowance reduces per term for up to a year**
- Hardship funding - where there are unforeseen difficulties
*The University Composition Fee varies for different types of students; applicants should see the Graduate Studies Prospectus for full details about precise amounts. Where a student from the European Union has been successful in gaining a fees award from public authorities, the Trust will not pay these fees.
** The PhD at Cambridge is a three year degree and Gates Scholars should are take on a research project that they and their supervisor think can be completed within three years. However, if there are unforeseen circumstances which means a Gates Scholars requires further funding during all or part of their fourth year, the Trust will consider an application on a discretionary basis. But Scholars should not rely on receiving any fourth year funding at the beginning of their PhD.
Receiving a salary or substantial other scholarship: the Trust reserves the right to reduce or not pay the standard maintenance allowance to Gates Scholars who are in receipt of a salary from their employer or a substantial other scholarship while a Gates Scholar.
Eligible CandidatesCandidates for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship:
- may be citizens of any country outside the United Kingdom
- may apply to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses of study:
- PhD (three year research-only degree)
- One year postgraduate course (e.g. MPhil, LLM, MASt, Diploma, MBA etc.)
- MSc or MLitt (two year research-only degree)
- may apply to study any subject available at the University of Cambridge
- must be admitted to one of the degrees above at Cambridge through the University's normal admission procedures - the Trust does not admit students
- must be applying for a new course of study or research if they are already a student at Cambridge - e.g. those who have already started their PhD are not eligible to be considered for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship
- who are - or have been - in receipt of a Gates Cambridge Scholarship may apply for a second scholarship; such candidates must apply by the second, international deadline and go through the same process of departmental ranking, shortlisting and interviewing as all other candidates
how to apply
Standard applications (via the Board of Graduate Studies)
All applicants apply simultaneously for admission as a graduate student to the University of Cambridge and a Gates Cambridge Scholarship using the one application pack.
To be considered for graduate admission and a Gates Cambridge Scholarship most applicants will need to submit all of the following documents to the Board of Graduate Studies by the relevant deadline:
- GRADSAF application form
- Academic transcripts
- 2 academic references
- 1 personal reference
- English language test scores if your first language is not English
- Any other documents required for admission to the course - e.g. research proposal, example of written work etc. (see the individual department/course website for details)

Interview Process
All candidates shortlisted for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship attend a 20 minute interview.
The interviews may be in person, by Skype or by telephone and are conducted by a panel of four members (a representative of the Trust, two academics and a Gates Cambridge alum) who are knowledgeable in a general way about the candidate’s field of study.
Candidates are asked about their work: why it excites them; what they know about the broader field of which it is part; why it is important; why coming to Cambridge will help them with their research or build on their earlier educational experiences. Also, do they understand that higher education brings privilege and opens opportunity for the future; what do they intend to do with the benefits they've had; how do they see themselves contributing in time. Candidates may also be asked questions of a probing intellectual or ethical dimension, to which there are no 'right' answers.
Interviews for US citizens normally residing in the USA are held in the USA at the beginning of February for entry in the following October. Interviews have been held in Annapolis, MD and in New York City in the past; in early February 2012 the interviews will be held in San Francisco, CA. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted before the Christmas break. Most candidates interview in person, but candidates who cannot attend an in person interview may interview by Skype or telephone.
Interviews for citizens of all countries other than the USA (except the United Kingdom) and US citizens normally residing outside of the USA are held in Cambridge in late March. About half of these candidates interview in person, while the other half interview by Skype or telephone (given their location). Shortlisted candidates will be contacted in early March.
All candidates are informed of the results of their interview within a week.

Applicants should submit their application no later than midnight (UK time). The Trust cannot guarantee that applications submitted after the deadlines will be considered.
