British Chevening Scholarship for Korea

Overview

The Chevening Scholarship Programme began in 1983 (the first scholars started in 1984, Fellows in 2005) and has developed into a prestigious international scholarship and fellowship scheme. The FCO now awards nearly 1,000 scholarships and over 200 Fellowships every year. There are over 32,000 alumni.

Competition for the scholarships is strong but each year approximately 25 Koreans are awarded scholarships – candidates who have demonstrated ambition, and the drive and intellectual capacity to make their dreams a reality.

Since the Chevening Scholarships in Korea started in 1984, more than 800 Koreans have joined the prestigious global Chevening family.

The British Council administers the Chevening Scholarships scheme with the British Embassy in Seoul.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR A CHEVENING SCHOLARSHIP?

(All dates here except the application period is changeable; therefore you need to keep checking
afterwards.)

Application period through the E-Chevening website & submission of required paper documents: 1400 on 2 November 2011 – 1700 on 17 January 2012. (Korean time) – The starting date of application period can be postponed, depending on the FCO’s eChevening website linkage situation.

(1) Please refer to the parts below for the required paper documentations in “What Documentation do I need to submit?" in this site and submit them by 1700 on 4 March 2012 to the British Embassy Seoul.
(2) The application website (e-Chevening site) is only available during aforementioned application period.
(3) Please keep your reference no. you receive after submitting your application. The no. will be used when you have enquiries afterwards about your application.
(4) You cannot have or check your ID and password from both BC or BE, so please keep them in safe and use them until you submit your application. (NB Once you lost them, there is no way to get them back or check them. Thus you need to create another ID and password and write down your application all over again.)
Your score in IELTS should be 6.5 or above, and the score needs to be written in the application site with the certificate numbers. You should hand in the transcript of IELTS before the application deadline as well, with other necessary documents.
Successful candidates at the first stage will be contacted individually around early Feb 2012. - The results of the first stage will be informed to you by email separately.
Interview : 29 Feb 2012 – 30 March 2012
- The interview schedule will be informed through phone, so you must update your contact details if there is any change after you complete your application.
Final email to the successful applicants: around middle of May 2012

WHAT DOCUMENTATION DO I NEED TO SUBMIT?

	NB1. While you are filling in the e-Chevening application site, you need to submit following documentations all together. Please submit them all in once with the order of named papers and you cannot submit after the application period is finished. NB2. About Document 5> You cannot submit your IELTS transcript as you need to request the transcript to the organisation where you took the exam. Therefore you should write down the TEST Report Form Number in the e-Chevening website, and request the same transcript to the organisation. NB3. About Document 6> If you do not have it by 4 March 2012, please send any proof which you already applied for a UK university before 4 March 2012, such as received email from school or screen capture that you can see from the school’s website. At least you need to submit your unconditional offer by 31 March 2012.
	* All documentations, which ought to be in English, need to be submitted altogether by 1700 on 27 Feb 2012 in order as follows; Academic certificates for all your degrees above Bachelor Academic transcripts for your all degrees above Bachelor Certificate of employment for your present job. (If you are between jobs, the certificate of employment of your latest job is acceptable.) – If you do not have any working experience, you do not need to submit this. Two sealed reference letters from two referees (Email reference letters are not acceptable.) One copy of recent IELTS Test (Academic module only) Report Form & one original copy of the test report form. The score should be 6.5 or above. TEPS, TOEIC or other English tests are not accepted. You need to submit the original transcript of IELTS, but it needs to be reissued by the organisation where you took the test. You should not submit the copy that you received as an original copy to keep. Please write down Centre Number in “Note” section in the e-Chevening, which you can see from the left part of your transcript. When you request your transcript from the organisation, you need to ask them to send it to the British Embassy Korea for your application. Unconditional Offer Letter, Admission Letter and Acceptance Letter from your UK university. If you are currently applying for a university place, you need to complete your application by 4 March 2012 and submit this documentation by 31 March 2012. If you have not received this letter before the deadline of application, please submit any evidence which you already applied for schools through the print-screen of the finalised page of application, or email from your school etc.

영국 외무성 장학금이란?

영국 외무성 장학금(Chevening Scholarships)은 영국에서 석사/박사/박사 후 과정을 이수하려는 해외의 우수한 젊은이들에게 주어지는 명성 높은 장학금으로, 영국 외무성에서 제곧되는 영국 정부 장학금입니다. 현재 전 세계적으로 매년 1,000여명 이상의 장학금을 수여하고 있고, 현재까지의 장학금 수여자는 32,000명 이상이 되고 있습니다.

영국 정부는 세계 150여 개국에 걸쳐 본 장학제도를 운영하고 있으며, 이 장학제도를 통해 우수하고 재능 있는 많은 젊은이들에게 세계적인 명성을 지닌 영국 대학에서 수학하는 동시에 영국에 관한 지식을 습득하여 모국에 기여할 수 있는 기회를 제공합니다. 매년 학문에 대한 열정과 꿈을 실현시키고자 하는 학구적인 추진력을 지닌 후보자들 중에서 높은 경쟁을 거쳐 수혜자를 선발하며, 매년 약 25 명의 한국인이 장학금을 받고 있습니다.

1984년부터 외무성 장학금이 지급된 이래로 한국에서는 900명 이상의 장학금 수혜자를 배출하였으며, 주한영국문화원과 주한 영국대사관이 함께 관할합니다.

재정 지원 항목
이 장학금은 영국 대학의 석사 과정 (1년)을 지원합니다. 경우에 따라 박사과정 또는 다른 장기 과정을 1년간 지원하기도 합니다.

지원 전공분야
2012/13년 가을학기를 위한 장학금을 위해 지원하는 전공분야는 다음과 같습니다. 단, 영어 어학과정, 예를 들어 TESOL같은 경우에는 지원하지 않습니다. MBA 과정도 우선순위 전공분야에는 포함되지 않으며, 영국에서 이미 학업을 하고 계시는 분 중 2년차의 석사과정이나 2-3년차의 박사과정을 위한 지원은 되지 않습니다.

지원 자격
다음과 같은 자격 요건을 갖추어야 합니다.

우수한 영어 실력 (자격:IELTS 6.5점 이상)
학사 이상의 학위 소지 (일반적 GPA 3.5/4, 3.8/4.3 혹은 B+이상의 성적)
직장 경력 (최소 2년 이상 선호) - 필수요건은 아님
학업 종료 후 필히 귀국할 것
현재 혹은 최근까지 주한 영국대사관이나 주한영국문화원에 재직중인 직원들은 지원할 수 없습니다. 또한 일반적으로 다음의 장학금 수혜자는 중복 지원할 수 없습니다.

선발 기준

선발시 주요심사 항목은 지원자의 경력과 자격 그리고 수학하려는 전공 분야 등입니다. 또한 전공 분야에서 출중한 실력을 가지고 있으며, 영국에서의 그 분야관련 학업 후 한국으로 돌아와 미래를 이끌어갈 지도자로서의 역량 있는 지원자를 찾습니다.

'쉐브닝' 은 무슨 뜻입니까?

쉐브닝은 영국의 대표적인 장학제도 입니다.

쉐브닝 하우스(Chevening House)란 영국 외무성 장관 공관의 명칭입니다. 1994년 당시 외무장관이었던 더글라스 허드 장관이 이 공관의 이름을 붙여, ‘Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Scholarships and Awards Scheme’에서 ‘The Chevening Scholarships Programme’으로 바꾸어 명명하였습니다.

장학생으로 선발되면 모든 대학에 지원할 수 있습니까?

영국 교육부인 DFES가 인정하는 영국 소재 어느 대학에서나 수학할 수 있습니다.

입학 허가를 받아야 장학금에 지원할 수 있습니까?

그렇지 않습니다. 그러나 늦어도 2월 말까지는 영국 학교에 지원을 마치고, 다음 해 3월 말까지는 unconditional offer를 받으셔서 문화원 측에 제출해야 합니다. 영국대학의 석/박사 과정에 대한 상세한 안내는 주한영국문화원 유학안내 홈페이지를 참고하시기 바랍니다.

지원 전에 영어 시험을 보아야 합니까?

네. 그리고 본 장학금은 IELTS Academic module 6.5 이상의 점수를 요구합니다. 지원시 온라인 지원서에 그 성적과 성적표 고유번호를 써 넣으셔야 합니다. IELTS 시험 안내는 주한영국문화원 IELTS 웹사이트를 참조하시기 바랍니다.

현재 해외에서 수학 중이거나 취업 중에도 지원 가능합니까?
서울에서 실시 예정인 면접에 참가할 수 있는 해외 지원자는 지원할 수 있습니다.

장학금은 연장이 가능합니까?

불가하며, 올해 장학금 수혜자로 선정된 후에 이를 포기하는 경우에는 그 사실이 올해 이후의 지원에도 불리하게 작용하게 됩니다.

대학 졸업자만 지원할 수 있습니까?

장학금에 지원하려면 학사 학위를 소지해야 합니다. 만일 지원 당시 학위를 취득하지 않았으나 이듬해 2월까지 졸업이 확실한 경우는 지원할 수 있습니다. (이 경우 졸업증명서 대신 졸업예정증명서를 제출해야만 학교측으로부터 졸업이 인정된다고 봅니다.)

통상적으로 최소 2년 이상의 직장 경력자를 선호하나, 2년이 되지 않는다고 해서 지원이 불가한 것은 아닙니다.

동반 가족에 대한 지원도 가능합니까?

아닙니다. 동반 가족을 위한 지원금은 없습니다.

학업은 FULL-TIME만 가능합니까?

장학생으로 선발되면 장학증서에 서명하게 되며, 이 장학증서에 나와있듯이 학업은 Full-time으로만 가능하며(Part-time 불가), 학업 이외의 part-time work 역시 하실 수 없습니다.

학업 종료 후 꼭 귀국해야 합니까?

학업종료 후 필히 귀국하여야 하며, 이는 학업 연장 및 직장에 관련된 문제라 하더라도 우선 귀국 후 다시 결정하셔야 합니다.

한국에 돌아 온 후에는 어떤 일들이 있나요?

귀국 후에는 영국 외무성 장학금 동창회(KACA; Korean Association of Chevening Alumni) 회원으로서 다른 수혜자들과 지속적인 관계를 유지하게 되며 주한 영국대사관과 주한영국문화원이 주최하는 장학금 수혜자들을 위한 정규행사나 리셉션 등에 참가하게 됩니다.
