Chevening Rolls-Royce Science and Innovation Leadership Programme for India


Chevening Rolls-Royce Science and Innovation Leadership Programme is a tailor-made programme for high-flying mid-career Indian professionals working in the fields of science, innovation, and related public administration.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Rolls-Royce present this remarkable eleven week opportunity at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford that will enable scholars from India to explore innovation and science policy, from an academic, practical and personal perspective.

Science & Innovation Leadership Programme

The Programme offers an intense 11-week course at the prestigiousSaïd Business School, University of Oxford. Its wide range of modules will include lectures, workshops, visits and interactions with high profile companies and scientists and will bridge pure research and business/scientific entrepreneurship, practical processes of innovation, commercialisation of research and technology transfer. The course is aimed at some of India's brightest scientists, business people and public servants.

The ideal candidate should be a mid-career government, science or media professional with leadership potential and experience in any of the following or similar disciplines: research, technology, manufacturing, business development, or business and public administration.

Programme Duration: Eleven weeks from 10 April - July 2012

Aims of the programme

The aim of the programme is to

promote the role of science and innovation as a driver of growth and opportunity
forge lasting ties between the UK and India’s future leaders

Overall Programme goals

An understanding of the UK science base and a range of innovation management processes
Awareness of the interactions between research, innovation and policy
Skills, tools and personal development to address practical challenges more effectively
Experience of the UK and in particular Oxford with its unique educational, cultural and historical environment
The beginnings of new networks and connectivity between India and the UK.

Programme Content

Intensive, high-level, inter-disciplinary study, debates with practitioner, guided/focused study visits and seminars and projects of professionals relevance, involving significant contact with UK specialists.

There will be three main modules: Science , Innovation and Policy. Each module will include lectures, workshops and discussions that focus on relevant ideas, institutions and introduce the group to experts and opinion leaders, together with a significant element of practice, including case studies, visits and projects.

A programme of external speakers, visits, project and events will ensure lively variety of engagement with UK institutions throughout, as well as properly diverse pedagogy.

Eligibility criteria

The programme is aimed at India's brightest scientists, business people and public servants. We are seeking applicants who can lead change in science and technology-related fields. Applicants should be able think creatively, to develop collaboration between India and the UK, often in complex and fast-moving areas.

The ideal candidate is a mid-career government, science, or business professional who has demonstrated exceptional potential leadership skills and an aptitude for innovation.

The programme will be broad-based and demanding. Chevening scholars will have the opportunity to develop their own contacts. Candidates will therefore need to demonstrate independent thinking, the ability to work in diverse teams as well as individually, excellent academic qualifications, and above all the motivation to contribute constructively to the programme.

Candidates will be expected to have had at least ten years work experience after their first degree, and expect to have at least fifteen working years ahead after the end of the programme.

Applications are invited from exceptional candidates from public, private and NGO sectors. Candidates should have either a strong academic background in science or technology or considerable experience of working in such fields. Their work should ideally be cross-disciplinary and of a type where developing links with UK industry and research is of mutual benefit.

conversant with written and spoken English

You are not eligible if you

have in the past received a British Government funded scholarship
work for the British Government (including the British Council, DFID and PAG's). Ex employees too cannot apply until 2 years of leaving.

The application requires mention of contact details of two referees. Please note that the referees should be professional and/or academic. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to send references in a sealed envelope before the final interviews as well as online versions.

2. We will further contact only short listed candidates inviting them for interviews. Please do not contact the British Council to enquire about the progress of your application.

3. Interviews will be conducted in New Delhi in January or February 2012. Short listed candidates will be expected to make their own travel arrangements and accommodation. We are unable to reimburse any costs incurred in attending the interview.

4 The decision of the Interview Panel is final.
