Overview

The British Embassy in Zagreb, Croatia and the Cambridge Overseas Trust are pleased to offer scholarships to successful applicants to Masters courses at the University of Cambridge, UK.

  • The British Government’s Chevening scholarship programme started in 1983 with the aim of becoming a prestigious programme attracting those with the greatest potential to be future leaders. In Croatia, the scholarship programme started in 1993 and since then more than 300 Croatian scholars have studied at the most prestigious British universities on full scholarships. Since 1996 a jointly-funded scholarship programme (funded by the British Embassy in Zagreb, the Cambridge Overseas Trust and the Open Society Institute) has allowed 30 Croatian scholars to study various subjects at the University of Cambridge
  • The Cambridge Overseas Trust was established in 1989 by the University of Cambridge in order to support international students on degree courses. Since then it has helped more than 7,000 young people from over 65 countries to study at one of the finest universities in the world.
The University of Cambridge aims to contribute to society through the pursuit of education, learning and research at the highest international levels. While taking pride it its 800 year history, it focuses on research capable of transforming human knowledge and society. The large number of international students in the University (over 18% of the student population last year) contributes to the quality and diversity of the student community in Cambridge.

  • The British Embassy in Zagreb, Croatia and the Trust are working together to offer the Croatia Chevening Cambridge Scholarship, tenable only at the University of Cambridge but forming part of the wide span of Chevening scholarships worldwide.

Who is eligible?

Only Croatian citizens are eligible for the scholarship. The award is targeted at students who meet the Chevening criteria of academic excellence, high motivation and potential leadership qualities, and who can fulfil the rigorous admission criteria of the University of Cambridge.

What courses are eligible?

Any Masters or one-year taught postgraduate course at the University of Cambridge will be eligible, but priority will be given to courses in the following fields:

Political Sciences
Business and Management
International Relations
Law and Justice
EU Studies
Home Affairs
Public Administration
Environment and Climate Change
Banking
Journalism
Finance and Economics

Applicants are encouraged to research thoroughly the course(s) in which they are interested. Full information on courses can be found via the links from the University website.

What is the value of the scholarship?

Each scholarship will cover the tuition fee and approved College fee in Cambridge, and a stipend for the duration of the course that is sufficient for a single person. The scholarship may also include other expenses such as return travel to/from the UK. Each scholarship offer will clearly state the terms.

If the course fee is one of those charged at a premium rate, such as the MBA or MFin, only part of the tuition fee will be paid by the scholarship, and the recipient will need to find the balance of the fee from their own resources. Again, each scholarship offer will clearly state the fee that will be covered by the scholarship.

How many scholarships will be awarded?

Up to two Croatia Chevening Cambridge Scholarships may be awarded in 2012-13.

How do I apply?

Two applications are required:

  1. Apply for admission to the University of Cambridge:
    - full details can be found on the website of the University’s Board of Gradation Studies, which manages all applications for graduate study
    - the deadline for applications is 2 December 2011

    - the scholarship application should be made via the online Chevening application
    - the deadline for applications is 31 October 2011
    - full details can be found on the websites of the British Embassy Zagreb and the British Council.

Due to technical problems with the on-line application system (e-Chevening), the deadline for the submission of applications has been extended to 27 November 2011.

Only candidates who are successful in both applications may be considered for a Croatia Chevening Cambridge Scholarship.

What is the selection process?

The British Embassy in Zagreb, Croatia will invite shortlisted candidates to interview in December 2011 - January 2012.

Scholarships will be awarded to candidates who have been successful at interview, and who have been offered admission to the University of Cambridge.

Successful candidates will be notified by end of January 2012, and will need to fulfil any outstanding conditions of their admission to the University (such as proof of English language skills) before applying for their student visa.

Can the scholarship be deferred until a later year?

No, the scholarship is only tenable in the year for which it is awarded, i.e. 2012-13. Candidates who wish to defer their studies until a later year will need to apply again to both the University and to the British Embassy in Zagreb, Croatia.
