Overview

HSBC Overseas Scholarship Scheme 2010/11 - The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)

The Hongkong Bank Foundation will award full scholarship(s) to non-final year undergraduate students of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) for a one-year overseas study in the academic year 2010/11.

The Scholarships

The scholarships will enable scholars who are currently studying under one of the following disciplines to spend a year AS A VISITING STUDENT at one of the overseas universities designated by HSBC.

Arts Subjects, Business and Economics, Environment, Communication, Health Care, Computer Science / Information Systems,Hotel and Tourism, Geography, Construction and, Land Use,Law, History, Dentistry, Medicine, Linguistics and LanguagesDesign,Science (Basic and Applied), Translation, Education, Social Sciences, Architecture, Engineering and Textiles.


Responsibility and Duty

Scholars are required to undertake that they must return to Hong Kong upon the completion of the one-year overseas study, and complete their degree course and graduate at CUHK. Scholars who fail to comply with this requirement are required to reimburse the full cost of the scholarship and be responsible for any cost thus incurred.

Scholars are required to participate in and complete the Hong Kong Young Ambassador Scheme (HKYAS), a three-week full-time summer programme from mid July to early August, organized by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups and to act as a goodwill ambassador for Hong Kong while abroad. Please refer to www.yas.org.hk for more information about HKYAS. Scholars may participate in other similar programmes with prior approval from HSBC.

Scholars should undertake to abide by the policies and requirements of both CUHK and overseas universities, and to participate actively in campus life and the community while overseas.

Terms and Conditions

The scholarships will NOT be offered to students who enrol in an overseas study course of less than a year or, arranged by CUHK or other organizations, for which financial support for their year abroad is already available either through CUHK or other sources.

Conditional offers will be made in April 2010 to candidates who completely fulfil the selection criteria and are shortlisted by CUHK. Confirmation of the scholarship awards will be made no later than the end of August 2010, subject to submission of the following documents on or before 15 July 2010: (1) formal admission by overseas universities, (2) an overall Grade Point Average (GPA) score of 3.3 or above (or equivalent) at the end of the academic year 2009/10, (3) submission of an application to the Hong Kong Young Ambassador Scheme or similar programmes approved by HSBC, (4) a letter from CUHK confirming the number of credits that the student plans to take during his/her year abroad. (5) a letter from the overseas university outlining the duration of the academic year 2010/11 and information on the number of credits/courses that a full-time overseas student should take. Please note that this figure should be regarded as final. Costs of any additional credits taken during the academic year 2010/11 will not be covered.

HSBC and CUHK do not have any arrangements with the overseas universities designated by HSBC (please refer to the attachment for the approved List of Overseas Universities) whereby scholars will be guaranteed admission. Selected candidates are responsible for fulfilling all application procedures and admission requirements at overseas universities of their choice from the approved List of Overseas Universities and be offered a place subsequently. Candidates are, therefore, strongly advised to pay the closest attention to application procedures as soon as possible and selected candidates should secure acceptance independent of HSBC and CUHK.

Amount of Scholarships

The maximum total value the scholarships in the academic year 2010/11 is HK$869,118, with no predetermined maximum value for each individual scholarship. There is no guarantee that all the scholarships set aside for CUHK will be awarded if HSBC fails to identify suitable candidates. In case less scholarships are awarded, the maximum total value may be adjusted accordingly.

Scholarship amount will only go towards (1) tuition fees, (2) a minimum economy return airfare, and (3) reasonable room and board costs, books and a small portion of living expenses.

The scholarships will NOT cover visa application fees or other associated fees, insurance, clothing expenses and other incidentals. A table "Guidelines on how to calculate a scholarship award amount" provided by HSBC will be given to the nominees who are initially nominated by CUHK for final selection by HSBC.

Eligibility

The applicants must be :

-Hong Kong permanent residents with the right of abode in Hong Kong
-non-final year undergraduate students
-with minimum GPA score of 3.3 (or equivalent) in the first semester of the academic year 2009/10. Non-first year students should also have a minimum overall GPA score of 3.3 (or equivalent) in the academic year 2008/09.
-well-rounded, participating in extra-curricular and community service activities
-no extensive experience of living or studying overseas
-in a financial situation which does not permit overseas study or extensive travel overseas
-committed to Hong Kong
-with a minimum total TOEFL score of 90 (Internet-based test) with scores for individual sections not lower than 22 on listening, 17 on writing, 21 on reading, and 21 on speaking; ORa minimum IELTS overall band score of 6.5, with no component below 6.0. These areirrespective of overseas universities' requirements. Test must be dated 12 February 2008 or later.

Application Procedures

1.Application forms can be downloaded from the website of the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/adm/sfas.

2.Completed application forms together with all requisite documents should be submitted in person to the Scholarships and Financial Aid Section, Office of Admissions and Financial Aid, Room 332, Pi Ch'iu Building during office hours (Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. – 5:15 p.m. except Public Holidays) on or before 15 January 2010.

3.Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview scheduled for March 2010.

4.Applicants are advised to sit for the TOEFL or IELTS Test BEFORE February 2010 in order to fit in the application schedule of overseas universities. Delayed provision of TOEFL or IELTS Test score transcript from CUHK nominee(s) will result in partial submission of his/her application, and his/her application will therefore not be processed.
