UK: PhD research Studentship within the School of Engineering and Computing, Glasgow Caledonian University

Overview

Applications are invited for a full-time PhD research Studentship within the School of Engineering and Computing. The studentship is for a period of three years, subject to satisfactory progress and provides payment of tuition fees at the UK/EU rate plus an annual stipend of £14,275*. The successful candidate is expected to undertake up to 6 hours of academic support activity per week.

*[please note that students from outside the EU are required to pay the difference between International and EU fees, currently this would amount to £6,100 per annum. This will be deducted from the stipend at the beginning of each session providing an annual stipend of £8,175.]

Project Description

The project will develop augmented vision system through the use of DSP techniques to improve the visual sensitivity of visually impaired people. The project will aim to aid 2 million people in the UK who suffer from reduced visual acuity that can be neither corrected nor treated. The project will be in collaboration with the Department of Vision Sciences at Glasgow Caledonian University. The DSP image processing techniques that will be developed will provide the modulation of images in real time and display the augmented images through video glasses. A DSP toolbox will be developed to enable the effectiveness of a range of image modulation techniques to provide augmented vision to be evaluated. The project will aim to implement the processing technique in FPGA/microcontroller embedded platforms.

The key challenges will be 1) the development of efficient DSP algorithms, 2) modelling of human visual processes to eliminate digital video artefacts and 3) implementation of the image processing algorithms on an embedded programmable platform.

The proposed system will provide a single visual solution that can be optimised for individual users by simply changing parameters in the algorithms. The project will provide a framework for a range of additional augment vision systems to be developed.

Responsibility and Duty

The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering the following objectives:
Evaluating the established contrast and temporal modulation techniques using DSP.
Development of a DSP toolbox to investigate varying image processing techniques to provide augmented vision.

Adding intelligent image monitoring to the processing to remove visual artefacts.
Implementing the proposed solutions on an embedded platform.

Eligibility

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a good honours degree (minimum 2.1) or Masters in Electronic or Computer Engineering, or a related discipline. The successful candidate will have good analytical and programming skills (experience in C/C++ is essential, experience in VHDL/Verliog is highly desirable) and a strong interest in some or all of the following: Digital Signal Processing, Augmented Reality and FPGA/microcontroller embedded computing. The candidate must also have a positive attitude toward interdisciplinary research and teamwork.
