China: Chinese Government Scholarship - Georgetown Call for Applications 2010

Overview

Georgetown has recently been granted three Chinese Government Scholarships by the Chinese Embassy in Washington for students to study in China for the academic year 2010-2011. The scholarship is provided by the Ministry of Education, and is administered by the China Scholarship Council (CSC). Seven Georgetown students have been awarded this scholarship in the past three years.

To apply for this scholarship, please complete the required application documents and send them to Ms. Tuoya Wulan, International Initiatives at cscfellowship@georgetown.edu or 227 Poulton Hall by November 30th, 2009. A committee will review your application and will notify you of your status in the following weeks. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Wulan.

About the Program

1. According to the regulation stipulated by the Ministry of Education, beginning Chinese students who wish to take college level classes must enroll in Chinese language classes first. For more advanced Chinese students, direct matriculation into other courses at the university is possible.
2. Some courses set for general scholars, senior scholars and postgraduate students in some universities can be conducted in English. Please refer to Directory of Chinese Higher Institutions Admitting International Students under Chinese Government Scholarship Program and Academic Programs on the CSC website.
3. Duration for scholarship specified at the time of admission can NOT be extended in principle.


Eligibility

1. Applicants must be current Georgetown undergraduate students (including graduating seniors), graduate students, or post-graduate students. Applicants are required to be in good academic and disciplinary standing. Minimum grade point average of 3.0
2. Applicants must be non-Chinese nationals.
3. Educational background and age limit:

■Applicants for undergraduate studies must be under the age of 25.
■Applicants for master degree studies must have a bachelor’s degree and be under the age of 35.
■Applicants for Doctoral degree studies must have a master’s degree and be under the age of 40.

Details of the Scholarship

Full scholarship: A Chinese government full scholarship covers tuition fee, fee for basic learning materials, accommodation, a moderate living allowance, outpatient medical service fees, Comprehensive Medical Insurance Plan of International Students in China, a one-off settlement subsidy, and a one-off inter-city travel allowance.
1. Monthly living allowance is paid to the students by the institution at the following rates (CNY Yuan per month):

■undergraduates: CNY ¥1,400
■Chinese language students: CNY ¥1,400
■master degree students, general scholars: CNY ¥1,700
■doctoral degree students, senior scholars: CNY ¥2,000

2. Fee for outpatient medical service refers to the out-patient expense generated in the institution’s hospital or the hospitals appointed by the institutions. The students should afford a certain percentage of expense in accordance with the institution’s relevant regulations.

3. Comprehensive Medical Insurance Plan of International Students in China is insured by the Ministry of Education of China for the scholarship students in China against diseases and accidents. The institution is entitled to ask for compensation on the payment receipts from the insurance company for the expenses generated from hospitalizing for serious diseases or from accidental injury according to the stipulated insurance articles.

4. A settlement subsidy after registration

■CNY ¥1,000 for new students whose period of studies in China lasts six months
■CNY ¥1,500 for new students whose period of studies in China lasts one academic year or more
5. An inter-city travel ticket (each for coming-in and leaving China)
Scholarship students should choose the nearest port to their admitting institutions for inter-city travel and a hard-seat train ticket (hard-berth train ticket only for overnight trip) will be provided to:

■transfer from the port of entry to the city where the admitting institution is located
■transfer from the city where the institution is located to the port of departure

Interested candidates submit required application documents (see the Application Check List below) to International Initiatives for internal Georgetown review. Deadline: November 30th, 2009.

Selected candidate(s) will be notified in the following weeks and will be recommended to the CSC by Georgetown. Candidate(s) will be asked to complete a separate application and submit it to the Chinese Embassy Education Office.
Final result will be announced in Spring 2010.
