Application Information
The College invites applications from graduate and undergraduate students of Sidney Sussex College for the Fox International Fellowships. Students from other Cambridge Colleges may also apply, but if they are successful they will be required to transfer their College membership to Sidney Sussex. These enable the holder to spend the academic year 2010-2011 at Yale University in the United States. The holder is not registered for a degree at Yale but has opportunity to take classes and seminars, to work with members of the Yale faculty, and to use all the facilities of the university. A stipend which covers living and travel expenses, plus health coverage and other benefits, are included in the award.
Successful undergraduate applicants will be those about to graduate from Cambridge, and their year at Yale functions as a gap year, often in preparation for further study in the UK or elsewhere. Successful graduate applicants are typically at work on doctoral projects at Cambridge which would benefit from exposure to material and scholars at Yale, and these holders are allowed to count their year at Yale as part of their PhD work, with suitable leave to work away from Cambridge having been obtained.

Your application must be made to the Graduate Tutor, Dr Iain Black (gradtutor@sid.cam.ac.uk)Dr Julius Ross (gradtutor@sid.cam.ac.uk) , Sidney Sussex College by 15th January 2010. Please download and complete the application form and submit two copies of this together with two copies of your proposal (of no more than 1000 words) of your planned academic activity at Yale. Please ask two academic referees to write to the Graduate Tutor, Dr Iain Black (gradtutor@sid.cam.ac.uk)Dr Julius Ross (gradtutor@sid.cam.ac.uk) directly by the deadline (these are your responsibility – the College will not chase up references which are not submitted or are late). For undergraduates these will normally be from your Director of Studies and another supervisor who knows you and your work well; for graduate students these will normally be from your current M.Phil or doctoral supervisor, plus one other academic referee who knows you and your work well (for recently arrived graduate students, it is permissible to have the second reference from you most recent previous degree).
Selection Criteria
Demonstrated commitment to serious research, and a capacity for leadership and civic engagement in the larger community. The main objective of the program is to identify and help foster potential “citizen ambassadors” who will participate in guiding the world toward a more peaceful order, thus we are funding both the proposal and the “person.”
Competition is open to graduate and professional students, graduating graduate students and graduating seniors conducting research in economics, political science, international relations, law, business and finance, management, environmental policy or contemporary history, with preference for topics of contemporary, applied, institutional relevance to issues of the world’s peace and prosperity. The candidates may come from different disciplines and departments as long as their project focuses on one or a blend of several of these fields.
Students wishing to study at Yale must demonstrate proficiency in the English language. Language skills. The candidate’s language skills must be sufficient both to succeed in their research project and to engage in the intellectual and social community of the host university.
Candidates for Fox Fellowships at Yale must demonstrate high skills in English conversation, reading and writing.
Please note that applications from international students proposing research projects in their country of origin are not eligible (i.e., US citizens are not eligible to apply for a fellowship at Yale). We prefer to receive applications from students who have not spent a significant amount of time in the US previously.
