Overview
NZDS Public and Open Scholarships will be awarded following a rigorous application and selection process. Successful candidates will undertake Pre-departure English language training in Vientiane 2010-2011 and take up Postgraduate courses in New Zealand in 2012.
1. Applicants for the NZDS awards must satisfy the following criteria:
• Be a Lao citizen and have been residing in the Lao PDR for the last 2 years
• be under 40 years of age at the time of application (must be born on or after January 30, 1970)
• be free of any criminal record
• hold an acceptable Bachelors Degree directly related to the proposed field of study (preference will be given to applicants whose first degree is from a non-developed country)
• have an appropriate work background
• have a minimum of 3 years full time work experience (post Bachelor degree). Public applicants must be currently employed by the government of the Lao PDR.
• be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to the development of the Lao PDR
• sign an undertaking to return to the Lao PDR (and work in the public sector for a minimum of 2 yrs, for Public category)
• satisfy the New Zealand government’s health regulations
• not hold another scholarship award during the period of the NZDS award
• must not have completed or be close to completing a course of study at Masters Degree level
• must not have permanent residence or citizenship status in New Zealand, Australia or another developed country
• must not be married or engaged to someone who holds or is eligible to hold citizenship or residence of
New Zealand, Australia or another developed country.
• have a high level of English language proficiency (minimum IELTS 5.5 or equivalent, with no
band less than 5.0) Applicants with an IELTS score of 6.5 or more may be eligible for direct entry.
• Scholarships are available at Postgraduate Diploma and Masters Degree level only. PhDs are NOT supported
2. The New Zealand Government, in line with the Lao PDR country development priorities, has identified the following key study areas for potential scholarship awardees: Development Studies/Sustainable Rural Livelihoods
• Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries, Water Resource Management, Environment and Natural
Resources, Rural Development, Development and Bio-security (quarantine, phytosanitation), Food Science and Veterinary Science
• Sustainable Tourism, Eco-tourism, Tourism Management Governance
• Law, Justice, Legal and Judicial Reform, Human Rights/Gender, Social Work
• Public Administration, Public Policy, Public Sector Management Trade and Development
• Trade Policy, International Trade, Economics, Business Education
• Education Management
• TESOL
3. NZDS applicants should refer to the New Zealand Universities Directory for International Students for a list of universities and courses available. This information is also accessible through the NZAID website: http://www.nzaid.govt.nz/
4. All applicants should complete the NZS Preliminary Application Form and attach ALL the following documentation listed below. Compulsory application documents (translated into English):
• Detailed curriculum vitae (cv) including qualifications and exact dates (day/month/year) of all work experience
• Originals and copies of academic transcripts for each year of tertiary study
• Originals and copies of all diplomas and/or degrees
• Original and copy of birth certificate and Lao Family Book
• Actual passport (if held) and copies of all official and stamped pages
• Originals and copies of 3 references no more than 2 years old, on official letterhead (referees should include current and previous employers, teachers, government or community leaders)
• Public applicants also require employer approval and should complete the form attached to the back of the Preliminary Application Form.
