Overview
One industry-funded PhD position in geochemistry is available in the Fluids and Mineral Deposits Group, Department of Earth Sciences, ETH Zürich.
Project description: This project aims at a better understanding of the fluid processes and chemical reactions that drive the formation of metamorphic veins in compressional orogens. We want to investigate if the processes of vein formation are dominantly controlled by the chemistry and flux rates of external fluids or by the chemical potential gradients imposed by local host rocks. The project will involve a component of field work, petrographic, fluid inclusion and stable isotope work using state-of-the-art methods (e.g., LA-ICP-MS of single fluid inclusions) as well as application of novel geochemical modeling techniques. The project is part of the international research network "VeinDynamics" that involves close collaboration of structural geologists, geochemists, hydrogeologists, and material scientists.
Requirements: A completed MSc or Diploma degree in geology or geochemistry is required. We seek a candidate with good field and analytical skills, who should also have a good background in geochemical thermodynamics and interest in numerical modeling.
How to apply
Please send your application package (PDF version), including CV, copies of degree certificates, and the name and contact details of at least one reference by e-mail to: Dr. T. Wagner (thomas.wagner@erdw.ethz.ch)
