[UK] and [Denmark]: The Anglo-Danish Society Scholarships 2010-11

Overview

The Anglo-Danish Society is a registered Charity, and was founded in 1924 with the encouragement of H.M. Queen Alexandra. It enjoys the patronage of Her Majesty the Queen and Her Majesty the Queen of Denmark. It has the active support of the Royal Danish Embassy and a number of Danish and British companies. It also seeks to maintain contact with other Anglo-Danish organisations for mutual benefit.

Applications now are invited from students undertaking POST-GRADUATE courses

of either

DANISH NATIONALITY for scholarships tenable at universities or other approved institution in the United Kingdom. Candidates' first degree should be from a Danish university;

or

BRITISH NATIONALITY for scholarships tenable at Copenhagen, Aarhus or Odense universities or other approved institution in Denmark.

Applicants should either have embarked on postgraduate research leading to a higher degree, or be assured of being able to do so in the academic year indicated above.

In addition to its own scholarships the Anglo-Danish Society administers the OVE ARUP FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP. This is awarded for study subjects related to the “built environment” (such as architecture, engineering, mathematics, physics and chemistry.

Scholarships are intended to be only a supplement to students’ other funding and will run for a period of up to six months from the beginning of the academic year indicated or such other date as may be approved. The minimum value is GBP 1,500 per grant. All applicants are required to submit a budget for their study period.

Successful applicants will be requested to submit a short report to the Society on the work undertaken during the period of study and will also be asked to give their permission for the Society to publicise awards.

Academic and residential arrangements are the responsibility of the student. Any queries should be addressed directly to the University/College concerned.

GUIDANCE FOR APPLICANTS

1. The only application documents to be completed/provided are the application form itself, the budget form and two recent references in English. If any other papers are added it may result in the application being rejected. This also applies to any applications received after 1st March 2010.

2. There are no restrictions as to the subject of study* (other than as specified for the Ove Arup Foundation Award) but applications for projects meeting either one or more of the following criteria will be favoured:

a) making use of specific educational opportunities existing between Denmark and the UK
b) contributing to cultural interchange between Denmark and the UK
c) having relevance to current issues in either or both countries.

3. In addition to 2a) above we will favour applicants whose statement makes clear why their choice of University/College offers particular advantages for their subject or circumstances.

4. While the nationality criterion (British for study in Denmark, Danish for study in the UK) will be strictly applied no other personal characteristics or circumstances will enter into the selection procedure. The requirement for a budget is to ensure that costs have been estimated realistically and that the applicant has a plan as to how they might be covered.

5. Applicants will be assessed on how they express, in lay terms and adequate English, the purpose of their proposed project, how it fits in with their own academic trajectory and why they consider it worthy of support.

6. While there is no requirement for a minimum period of study, any application for a period of study shorter than a full academic year will need to justify how it fits in with a broader academic aim.

7. Applicants are asked to keep the Society informed of any change of address/telephone number/e-mail.

8. Should an applicant decide not to proceed with the course of study, the Society should be informed immediately.

* Recent awards have been made for subjects as diverse as music, architecture, engineering, bioethics, environmental studies, fine art, development studies, and human physiology.
