USA: Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship 2010

Overview

As part of its science and national security missions, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) supports a broad spectrum of basic and applied research in science and engineering. This research is conducted at NNSA National Laboratories and through extensive grants and contracts with universities and the private sector. Because of its continuing needs, NNSA has a special interest in encouraging the development of the next generation of leaders in stewardship science.

The primary objective of the NNSA Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship program is to encourage the training of scientists by providing financial support to talented students who enter a period of study and research in designated areas of stewardship science accompanied by practical work experience at NNSA research facilities.

Now the Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship (SSGF) Program provides outstanding benefits and opportunities to students pursuing a Ph.D. in areas of interest to stewardship science, such as high-energy density physics, low-energy nuclear science, or properties of materials under extreme conditions. Fellows also participate in research at a DOE laboratory.

This program is open only to U.S. citizens and permanent resident aliens studying at a U.S. university who are exceptional senior undergraduates or are in their first or second year of graduate study.

Eligibility

Students must be planning full-time, uninterrupted study toward a Ph.D. degree at a U.S. university.

Students in their first or second year of graduate study in the areas of interest listed under Program Objective are eligible to apply for the NNSA Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship. Exceptional senior undergraduates who can meet all the requirements listed here may also apply.

Applicants must be either U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens.

This is an equal opportunity program open to all qualified persons without regard to race, sex, creed, age, physical disability, or national origin.

Benefits

All tuition and required fees will be paid during the appointment period.

A yearly stipend of $32,400.

A $1,000 allowance is paid annually to the fellow to be used for duplication expenses, conferences, copies of conference proceedings, travel, or other expenses incurred while doing research or activities directly related to the professional development of the fellow.

The NNSA attempts to provide adequate funding to meet the costs of graduate school. If additional responsibilities, such as a teaching assistantship, are accepted, Krell Institute must be informed in advance and any resulting income may be deducted from the stipend. However, scholarship awards, prizes, and other payments (including Veteran’s Benefits) that do not require a service may be accepted.

Requirements

The fellowship program requires a program of study (POS) that will provide a solid background in one of the three major topics listed under Program Objective. Breadth in the program of study that might include courses in the physical, engineering, mathematical and computer sciences is highly desirable. The submitted program of study must be approved and signed by the graduate advisor from your preferred institution.

Support of this fellowship is limited to four years and must be renewed each year. Duration of the award is affected by the status of the awardee and projected availability of funds. Renewal of the fellowship each year is based on the submission of an online renewal application that demonstrates acceptable academic performance, progress toward completing the approved POS, and research consistent with program goals.

The practicum (research assignment) will be undertaken at a NNSA research laboratory for at least one three-month period. The practicum is intended to broaden the fellows’ experience outside the main thesis path and to make them become better aware of the areas that encompass stewardship science. The practicum is normally undertaken during the summer and must be completed before the end of the second year of the fellowship. An additional allowance is provided to cover extra expenses during this time.

Fellows are expected to attend an annual fellowship meeting, usually held in June in Washington DC for ~3 days. The expenses of attending this meeting are separately compensated by the program.

During the fellowship period, fellows are expected to be enrolled as full-time graduate students at a U.S. college or university and conducting study and research within the objectives of the fellowship program. The summer should be spent conducting full-time research related to the completion of their degrees, being enrolled in classes, or being on practicum assignments.

Application deadline: 12 Jan 2010
