USA: John Gardner Public Service Fellowship at Stanford University 2010

Overview

Gardner Fellowships provide opportunities for graduating seniors to invest their talent, energy and training in public service. Six fellows, three from Stanford and three from UC Berkeley, are selected each spring. Each is provided with a $27,500 stipend plus health insurance for ten months and an assignment to work with a government or nonprofit agency. Travel and other related expenses are provided as appropriate. In addition, each fellow is matched with a leader in public service who works fulltime at the placement organization and guides the student's professional growth and development and provides opportunities and exposure that exceed what is normally available to a recent graduate.

Through the Gardner Fellowship, recent fellows have

- researched and developed case studies to educate global health delivery leaders
- served on the group to triage Pakistan's humanitarian crisis
- overseen legislation and advocacy for comprehensive immigration reform
- co-produced a report to the Obama administration on municipal policy recommendations

Requirements

Placements are determined during Spring Quarter. Gardner Fellows must be able to fulfill the following commitments:

- Interview with prospective mentors prior to graduation
- Participate in orientation sessions to be held in spring and late summer on one of the two campuses
- Design a personal learning plan
- Participate in a mid-year meeting, and a closing meeting at the end of the fellowship year
- Write year-end report and stewardship letters

Fellows also will be asked to assist the program in future years by recruiting applicants and/or mentors, and by participating in information and training sessions

Eligibility

To be eligible for a Gardner Fellowship, you must be a current graduating senior or coterm of Stanford or University of California, Berkeley, and a US citizen at the time of placement. Applicants are encouraged from any major field of study and from a wide variety of service experiences; they need only share a commitment to the cause of public and voluntary sector service.

Selection Process
Applicants will be judged according to the following criteria:

- record of academic accomplishment
- demonstrated commitment to public servic, and an articulated area of interest

- readiness for the fellowship experience
Note: You should not and need not have a specific placement or mentor in mind to apply.

Interested students can obtain applications from either of the campus program offices: the Haas Center at Stanford, or the Institute of Governmental Studies at Berkeley. Students should submit an application online. Applicants must also solicit two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a faculty member who is familiar with their college level work.

The selection committee will review applications and develop a list of finalists to be interviewed. Awardees must commit by the first Tuesday of Spring Quarter. Following the awards, program staff assists Fellows in selecting an appropriate mentor and organization. Fellowships ordinarily begin in September; placements must be located within the United States.

Essay questions

In 500 words or less, answer the following three questions to explain why the Gardner Fellowship should invest in you as a future public service leader. The fellowship selection committee pays particular attention to these personal statements.

What issue do you care most deeply about and what would be your ideal nonprofit or government placement? What would you like to learn from a mentor who is an outstanding leader in your field of choice?

Describe some aspect of your background that best exemplifies your commitment to a particular issue area and public service more generally.

Leadership takes many forms. John Gardner spoke of public servants as individuals who are optimistic, curious, open, and positive. How would you describe your leadership qualities to a potential placement?

Resume with the following categories

Education (include all post-secondary education, relevant coursework, and research experience)

Work Experience (begin with the most recent or current job and include dates of employment, the employer and/or business and/or supervisor's name, location, your title, and a description of your responsibilities)
