Overview
The Sharon L. Doherty Award was established in 1993 to recognize outstanding University of Minnesota student efforts that positively affect the campus climate for women students. This award honors the work of former doctoral student and University of Minnesota alumna, Sharon Doherty, whose exhaustive efforts led to the successful Commission on Women's Students Initiative and continued University commitment to programming for women students. This award is given to a University of Minnesota Twin Cities student who has demonstrated outstanding volunteer service concerning women's issues on campus or in the broader community.

Recognition
Awardee will receive a $400 UM Bookstore gift certificate. Award to be given at the annual spring “Celebrating University Women Awards Program.”
Eligibility
University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus undergraduate or graduate students enrolled at least half time.
Selection Criteria
Nomination evaluated based on narrative and letters of support documenting outstanding volunteer contributions, including the degree to which involvement has addressed women's issues or improved women's lives.
Selection Committee
Committee appointed by the Women's Center comprised of students, faculty, P/A staff, and civil service and/or bargaining unit staff.
Application process
University of Minnesota students, staff or faculty may make nominations. Students are encouraged to self nominate. Individuals nominated but not selected may be renominated in subsequent years. Nominations must include the following items:
One letter of nomination (a narrative describing how the nominee meets the criteria)
Two letters of support
Nominee’s resume or curriculum vitae
