VLIR UOS Scholarship for Master of Nutrition and Rural Development, Main Subject: Human Nutrition at Universiteit Gent
Ghent University is offering a 2-year Master of Science program in Nutrition and Rural Development and this since 2007-2008. The main subject Human Nutrition is an extended program based on the former one-year Master Program, ICP Food Science and Nutrition. The theme of the program remains the same: ‘The multidisciplinary approach of the nutrition problems in the development’.
Program structure
The course provides an outline of all theoretical information and practical experience, directly and indirectly related to a better understanding of nutrition problems in the developing countries, their origin and solutions. The program includes lectures, research projects, Masters’ Test, case studies, discussions, seminars, demonstrations, lab work, exercises and visits. Admission requirements
Each application will be evaluated by a board of admission of the specific programme and has to be approved by the Faculty Council and by the Rector’s office.
Entry conditions
Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree of minimum 3 years with good overall scores (at least a second class or equivalent, preferably higher) from a university or recognized equivalent.
Language knowledge
The applicant must be proficient in the language of the course or training programme, i.e. English. Command of the English language is a very important criterion for admission. With the exception of those who have a diploma (Secondary Education, Academic Bachelor Degree, Master Degree) issued by an institution officially recognized by the Flemish Government, applicants must be able to prove their proficiency in English. There are 4
possibilities to supply this proof:
1. TOEFL certificate (the UGent TOEFL code is 2643) with:
• a minimum total score of 550 on the paper based test, or
• a minimum total score of 79 on an internet based test.
The test validity is max. 2 years.
2. IELTS with a minimum overall band score of 6. The test validity is max. 2 years.
3. Proof of at least 1 year of comprehensive English-based instruction at a university or recognized equivalent.
4. Proof of a successful “Intermediate Academic English” test at the Ghent University Language Center.
Remark: TOEFL/IELTS predictive tests are not acceptable
Specific academic admission criteria
Participants should hold a university degree (min. B.Sc., preferentially of a 4 year-program) in a discipline related to the content of the course (nutrition, agriculture, medical sciences, chemistry, etc.) from a recognized university, college or institute. It is highly recommended that the participants have a few years’ practical experience in a developing country before they attend the course.
If English is not their mother tongue or the language of instruction during their university studies, they should hold a TOEFL (min. 550) or IELTS (min. 6)certificate or pass an entrance exam at UGent before the start of the academic year. All applicants should send their application file for evaluation to the educational committee of the MSc. Nutrition and Rural Development program.
