Chinese Government Distinguished International Students Scholarship

Overview

The Distinguished International Students Scholarship is set up by the Ministry of Education of P. R. China (MOE) to sponsor outstanding international students who have finished their bachelor’s education or above in China and have been enrolled by designated Chinese HEIs for higher academic pursuits or are now carrying out their Master’s or Doctoral studies in those institutions. China Scholarship Council (hereinafter referred to as CSC), entrusted by the MOE, holds the responsibility of the assessment, approval and the routine management of the program.

200 scholarships are available for the academic year 2012.


Ⅰ.CATEGORIES OF APPLICANTS AND DURATION OF SCHOLARSHIP

Ⅱ.APPLICATION
1. Applicants shall submit their applications to CSC via the institutions’ recommendation if they continue to study in the present institutions.
2. Applicants shall submit their applications to CSC via the new admitting institutions’ recommendation if they graduate from the current institutions and apply for further study in other institutions.
3. Deadline for application is May 10, 2012.
4. The host institution must be one of the Chinese Government Scholarship institutions specified by MOE.
Ⅲ.CRETERIA & ELIGIBILITY
1. Applicants must be international students currently studying in the designated Chinese HEIs and in good health.
2. Applicants must be excellent in academic performances and well-behaved during their study in China, and continue to study in China for doctoral or master’s degree studies.
3. Applicants for master’s degree studies must be under the age of 35, and applicants for doctoral degree studies must be under the age of 40.
4. Applicants shall not enjoy any other kind of sponsorship.


.VALUES OF SCHOLARSHIP

- Exempt from registration fee, tuition fee, fee for laboratory experiment, fee for internship, and fee for basic learning materials; free accommodation on campus;
- Living allowance;
- Fee for outpatient medical service, Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Benefit Plan for International Students in China.
Note:
1) Costs of the laboratory experiment or internship that beyond the university’s arrangements should be self-afforded.   
2) Fee for basic learning materials ONLY covers the necessary learning materials prescribed by the host institution, and other textbooks and materials shall be self afforded.    
3) Monthly living allowance is granted to the students through the host institution at the following rates (CNY Yuan per month):
- Master’s degree students: CNY 1,700 Yuan
- Doctoral degree students: CNY 2,000 Yuan
Scholarship students shall receive their monthly living allowance after registration. New students who register before15th (15th included) of the registration month will get the full amount of living allowance of that month, and those who register after 15th will get half amount of that month. The graduates will get a living allowance for another 15 days after the graduation date set by the university. The allowance will be terminated from the next month after students suspend their studies, drop school or complete schooling from the university. Monthly living allowance covers school holidays. Scholarship students who missed the monthly living allowance during holidays could be reimbursed upon their return on campus. The allowance will be suspended for one month if the students do not register on time without permission from the university in advance, leave for non-health reasons or are absent from the university over a month.
Students who have to suspend their studies for health reasons are required to go back to their home countries for treatment. The international travel expenses should be covered by the students themselves. With the university’s approval, the scholarship status can be reserved for up to one year, and their living allowances will be suspended during their leave. The scholarship status will not be reserved for those who suspend their studies for other reasons.
4) Fee for outpatient medical service refers to the outpatient expense in the institution’s hospital or the hospitals appointed by the institution. The students should are required to a certain percentage of expense in accordance with the institution’s relevant regulations.
5) Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Benefit Plan for International Students in China is provided by MOE for the scholarship students in China against hospitalizing for serious diseases and accidental injuries. The institutions or the appointed medical assistance agencies provide advancement service for insurance expenses, and claim for compensation with relevant payment receipts from the insurance company according to the stipulated insurance articles. For scholarship students, the individual claim will not be accepted by the insurance company.
6) The inter-city travel expenses shall be self-afforded if the applicants awarded the Distinguished International Students Scholarship need to travel from their graduation institutions to new admitting institutions. . If students who are originally the Chinese Government Scholarship students enjoying free international travel expenses obtain the Distinguished International Students Scholarship, their international air tickets will be provided once only upon final graduation. The international travel expenses shall be self-afforded if students return to their home countries during the study period.
Ⅴ.APPLICATION DOCUMENTS
The applicants must fill in and provide the following documents truly, correctly and completely (in quadruplicate).
1. Application Form for Distinguished International Students Scholarship (filled in Chinese or in English)
ALL APPLICANTS for this scholarship are required to fill in and submit the online application form. Applications through other methods are not accepted by CSC. Please print the application form after submitting it online.

2. Highest diploma (notarized photocopy): For those who haven’t obtained their diploma on application due to time reasons, a proof of expected graduation issued by their institutions should be enclosed.
3. Photocopy of Admission Notice or proof of on-campus postgraduate studies: Candidates shall provide a proof of their postgraduate admission issued by the institutions if they have not obtained Admission Notice on application due to time reasons.
4. Academic transcripts during the study in Chinese HEIs.
5. Study or research plan: No less than 900 words for master’s degree candidates, no less than 1500 words for doctoral candidates.
6. Articles published or proof of academic achievements.
7. Recommendation letters: One from the authority administering international students’ affairs in the institution where the student is currently studying; two from professors or tutors.
8. An official note from the Embassy of candidate’s home country in China, approving the candidate’s application, and indicating that the candidate is not included in the bilateral exchange scholarship program.
The above documents should be forwarded to CSC before May 31, 2012 via the recommending institution. Individual applications are not accepted by CSC.
Ⅵ.APPROVAL AND NOTIFICATION
CSC will invite experts to assess the academic eligibility of the applicants through their documents received CSC will inform the recommending institutions of scholarship winners by end of July and CSC will issue the certificate of Award of the Distinguished International Students Scholarship to the scholarship winners through their institutions.
Ⅶ.Others
1. The duration of the “Distinguished International Students Scholarship” cannot be extended if scholarship students fail to complete their studies on time due to personal reasons.
2. Scholarship students are required to participate in the Annual Review of the Chinese Government Scholarship Status organized by CSC every year. Those who fail in the Annual Review will have their scholarship terminated.
