Computer Simulations for Science and Engineering (COSSE) - Erasmus Mundus Programme

Overview

The Erasmus Mundus programme "Computer Simulations for Science and Engineering" (COSSE) is a joint initiative of four European universities:

- KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden
- Technical University of Berlin, Germany
- Technical University of Delft, the Netherlands
- Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen- Nürnberg, Germany

The field of computer simulations is of great importance for high-tech industry and scientific/engineering research, e.g. virtual processing, climate studies, fluid dynamics, advanced materials, etc. Often the field is referred to as the third pillar of science complementing theory and experiments.

COSSE is a two-year master's programme offering a double degree from two universities. The students enter one of the universities and continue the second year at one of the other institutions in another country. COSSE offers education of the highest international standard as well as a unique experience of meeting different European cultures, languages, climate and nature.

Students from any country are welcome to apply. A number of Erasmus Mundus scholarships are available.

Eligibility

The following requirements must be met in order to be eligible for admission to the COSSE programme. Please also note that the programme has a limited number of places and that a selection takes place amongst eligible students.

The requirements are based on:

UK: OSI/FCO Chevening/University of Essex Scholarships in Human Rights

Overview

The scholarships aim to provide opportunities for independent postgraduate study in the United Kingdom for students who are engaged in or intending to pursue postgraduate work in their own country and who have demonstrated both academic excellence and the potential to become leaders, decision makers, and opinion formers in their own country. Subject to satisfactory progress, the scholarships lead to the award of a master's.

The scholarships will enable suitably qualified students to pursue taught postgraduate programs within the Human Rights Centre at the University of Essex. The programs offered are the MA in the Theory and Practice of Human Rights, the MA in Human Rights and Cultural Diversity, the LLM in International Human Rights Law, and the LLM in International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law.

Each award will provide for payment of academic tuition fees, examination fees, a monthly stipend for living expenses sufficient for a single student, and other agreed allowances including one return economy airfare.

Eligibility

The scholarships are open to applicants from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Indonesia, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Palestine, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

•already hold (or expect to hold by the time of taking up the award) a relevant first degree of an equivalent standard to a good UK second-class Honours degree;

Application Process

Application forms (together with information about the courses at the Human Rights Centre) are available from your local Educational Advising Centre/Soros Foundation or British Council, or the British Embassy if you are applying in Turkmenistan (see full contact details for your local scholarship coordinators below). Applicants must complete a Graduate Admissions Applications Pack. (This requires submitting a number of additional documents, such as academic references.) It may be that applicants will not be given an original copy of the Graduate Admissions Form, but rather a photocopy of the form. This is equally valid.

Please note the following:

•Incomplete applications will not be considered; four complete copies (the original and three photocopies) of the application must be received.
•The overall impression of the application will be taken into consideration. Applications should be typed if possible or, if this is not feasible, they should be written clearly, with defined paragraphs and margins. Illegible applications will be unlikely to succeed.
•References must be academic (from the institution where applicant's degree was earned). You may, if you wish, include a professional reference in addition to the two academic references.
•Statement of Purpose should be clear and concise and hand-written. Candidates should remain within the 500 word guideline as only the first 500 words of the statement will be taken into consideration.
•If an application for a scholarship for the MA or LLM is unsuccessful, the program cannot subsequently forward it to the university for consideration. Applicants who want to make a separate application to the university should contact the relevant department.
•Applicants must reach the required level of English language. This should be at least 7.0 IELTS overall with no individual band less than 6.5.
Completed applications should be sent to the local scholarship coordinator (see below full contact details of your local scholarship coordinators).

Candidates should retain a copy of their application.

Deadline

January 18, 2010

Selection

All applications will be sent by the Soros Foundation/Educational Advising Center/British Council/British Embassy in Turkmenistan to the Human Rights Centre at Essex. Applications will be considered by selectors for the university programs who will prepare a shortlist of applicants to be invited for interview. By the end of March applicants will be informed as to whether they have been invited for interview and English language tests. It is expected that these will take place in late March/early April 2010.

The final decisions as to which applicants will be offered scholarships will not be taken at the time of the interviews. These decisions will be taken later by the Human Rights Centre (in conjunction with OSF and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office). All applicants should be informed by the end of May 2010 as to whether they have been successful or not.

Please note that all successful applicants will be invited to attend a one-month preparatory academic writing summer school in August 2010. The Network Scholarship Programs' (NSP) Pre-Academic Summer Program is designed to prepare NSP grantees for a successful academic experience in the UK. Successful applicants will be provided with the opportunity to refine their research and writing skills through intensive courses in academic writing and social sciences. The exact date and location of the summer school will be available at a later stage in the selection process.

USA: Law & Society Post-doctoral Fellowship - The University of Wisconsin

Overview

The Institute for Legal Studies of the University of Wisconsin Law School will appoint a post-doctoral fellow for the 2010-11 academic year. We invite applications from scholars who are in the early (pre-tenure) stage of their career or scholars whose careers have been interrupted or delayed. Eligibility is limited to humanities or social science scholars who work in the law and society tradition, for example, anthropologists, economists, historians, political scientists, and sociologists. Advanced ABD graduate students may apply, but the PhD must be completed before beginning the fellowship.

Value of this fellowship

The stipend will be $25,000, plus a research allowance of $5,000 and a benefits package that includes health insurance.

The fellowship is designed to support a scholar at an early stage in his or her career when, under prevailing circumstances, career pressures or teaching responsibilities might divert the individual away from research. At the Institute, the Fellow will be able to devote most of his or her time to research and writing and will find a sympathetic and critical audience to support that work. Fellows are expected to be in full-time residence in Madison, to organize and lead a colloquium for graduate students, and to actively participate in the intellectual life of the Institute, which includes lectures, workshops, conferences and colloquia.

Deadlines: The Institute for Legal Studies holds one post-doctoral fellowship competition per year. Completed applications, including letters of reference, must be received by January 8, 2010, in order to ensure full consideration. The award will be announced around March 1, 2010.

Eligibility: While non-U.S. citizens may apply, this fellowship is intended for early career scholars who plan to compete for a University teaching position in the U.S. market.

How to Apply: Application materials must be submitted by mail; materials sent by electronic mail or fax will not be considered. In evaluating applications, the Institute will focus on the potential contribution of the candidate to the intellectual life of the Institute; the originality and significance of the candidate’s proposed research project; the candidate’s scholarly promise, achievements, and ability to complete the project; and the likelihood that the finished product will advance basic understanding of the topic.

A complete application consists of the following:

• Curriculum vitae (with address and complete contact information).
• Official transcripts (graduate level only).
• Three letters of recommendation (must be sent separately). If the dissertation has not been completed, one of the letters must confirm the expected completion date.
• A research proposal (8-12 double-spaced pages). It is essential that the proposal situate the research in the existing literature and that it address relevant methodological issues, including sources of data. The proposed work may be in any of the social science or humanistic traditions associated with law and society scholarship, and may use any form of data; the project will be evaluated on its merits, in reference to the tradition in which it is situated.

Address/Contact: Applications should be sent to: Law & Society Fellowship Program; Institute for Legal Studies, UW Law School, 975 Bascom Mall, Madison WI 53706-1399.

Questions may be addressed to Pam Hollenhorst, Associate Director of the Institute for Legal Studies. Information about the Institute for Legal Studies and its activities can be found at the ILS homepage
