Overview

The European master programme in System Dynamics is specifically designed for students who are interested in learning how to initiate strategic change in organizations.

With the growing interconnectedness of society and increasing turbulence, organisations in the public and private sectors are continuously confronted with the need for improvement in strategy development, policy design and decision making in and across complex, dynamic domains.

11 Category A scholarships: Third country (i.e. non-European) students: Foreach Third-country student, the scholarship amounts to € 24.000 per year, for a maximum of two years. This includes a contribution to travel, installation and any other type of costs to a maximum of €8.000; a contribution to participation costs (including insurance coverage) to a maximum of € 4.000/semester and a monthly allowance of €1.000/month.

If you wish to enroll in the European Master programme in System Dynamics, you should meet the following requirements:


*you should hold a BSc. degree in social sciences, management sciences, natural sciences or engineering sciences. Students from other disciplines but with a strong interest in System Dynamics are also invited to apply.
*your average grades must be between A and B.
*you must be able to hand over proof of proficiency in English

AHRC Professional Preparation Master’s Scholarships, Newcastle

Overview

The International Centre for Cultural and Heritage Studies (ICCHS) at Newcastle is a recognised centre for interdisciplinary research and consultancy into museum, heritage and gallery studies.

Our well established MA programmes are vocational and provide students from all over the world with the knowledge, skills and understanding required to work in a variety of roles, from curators, education officers and managers to cultural policy makers. The programmes benefit from our experience in and engagement with the sector and we also use a wide variety of external lecturers who are all practitioners in the field, working for organisations such as the National Trust, the V&A, English Heritage, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, and Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums.

For 2011 entry we expect to have four studentships available through the AHRC’s Professional Preparation Master's scheme. This scheme supports students undertaking a Postgraduate Diploma or Master’s course that focuses on developing high level skills and competencies for professional practice. A full award covers fees and an annual, tax free stipend of up to £8,845 (2011/12 rates). A partial award covers fees only. If you are a part time student, support is pro rata. Person Specification

An upper-second-class honours degree (or international equivalent) from a recognised university or college. Those able to demonstrate considerable work experience in the museum, gallery or heritage sectors are equally encouraged to apply. Most students have acquired some preliminary experience of work in museums, galleries or a heritage organisation, usually as volunteers, and this is recommended, though not a prerequisite for acceptance onto our courses.

Fulbright Grants with the European Commission

Overview

Funding is available for American and European researchers, lecturers, international educators, and graduate students to focus on a wide range of issues concerning the European Union and the U.S.-EU relationship. The Fulbright-Schuman Program provides $3,000 per month plus a travel stipend, visa, and health and accident insurance for grants between two months and one academic year.

The program is open to citizens of all 27 EU member states and to U.S. citizens with two years of relevant experience. European participants focus on research and/or post-graduate study at an accredited American university or independent research center. Americans conduct research or lecturing in any of the EU member states, either independently or in affiliation with European universities and other institutions. The Fulbright-Schuman Program is administered by the Fulbright Commission in Brussels and is jointly financed by the U.S. Department of State and the Directorate-General for Education and Culture of the European Commission.

SEVEN Fund Teaching Fellowship Competition

Overview

The SEVEN Fund 2011 Teaching Fellowships enable teachers to travel to Rwanda and study business solutions to poverty. The objective of the Fellowship is to introduce the concepts of business solutions to poverty within the K-12 curriculum. Applicants are not required to have any previous experience in this area; instead, we ask only that you are interested and willing to learn. Winners will be invited to spend two weeks in Rwanda with the SEVEN Fund team, meeting with leaders in the private, government, and education sectors. Individual meetings and trips will also be arranged depending upon the interests of the winning teachers, allowing for the customized exploration of personal interests For example, a biology teacher might spend time with scientists working in Rwanda’s emerging biotech cluster or visiting an innovative sciences school; an art teacher might travel the country to study artisan cooperatives specializing in different handicrafts; a journalism teacher might shadow the editor of a major national Rwandan publication.

Three Fellows will be selected from public school settings, and one Fellow will be chosen from a faith-based school. Interested applicants must submit applications online by January 15th, and the winner will be notified during the first week of February.

What will the Fellowship include?

Fellows will travel to Rwanda for a two-week period during Summer 2011. The exact dates will be determined with the winners, but will occur between June and August 2011. Fellows will be provided with round-trip coach class airfare, lodging, and a daily stipend to cover incidental expenses, such as meals and local transportation. Experienced SEVEN Fund staff will travel with the teachers throughout the two weeks and coordinate all details of the trip.


During the two weeks, the Fellows will meet leaders from around Rwanda; will attend sessions led by SEVEN Fund principals exploring the concepts of business solutions to poverty; will explore for-profit ventures across different sectors in Rwanda; and will complete an individual project that aligns with their personal and academic interests.

Teachers who complete the requirements of the program will receive a $1,000 stipend.

Fellowship in Economic and Social History

Overview

The German Historical Institute, Washington, DC, is now accepting applications for a six-month fellowship in American or European Economic and Social History, with the possibility of extending it to one year (depending on the availability of funding). Preference is given to applicants on the postdoctoral level. The monthly stipend is € 3000 for EU citizens and $3200 for US citizens. The Fellow is expected to be in residence at the GHI and participate in GHI activities and events, including planning an economic/social history workshop financed by the GHI. The Fellow will have the opportunity to make use of the resources in the Washington, DC area, including the Library of Congress and the National Archives, while pursuing his or her own research agenda. The starting date of the fellowship is September 2011.

Fellowship opportunities for PhD work in Jewish studies

Overview

The Tam Institute for Jewish Studies (TIJS) at Emory University offers several top-off fellowships to support PhD students pursuing Jewish studies topics in any of the James T. Laney Graduate School’s programs, including the Graduate Division of Religion and the departments of history, comparative literature, and anthropology. These fellowships supplement the generous departmental fellowships and tuition waivers awarded to all accepted PhD students. No separate application is required; departments and programs will nominate appropriate candidates who are offered admission.

The Ph.D. program in Jewish history provides students with rigorous training in their fields of specialization while encouraging comparative study. Students who focus on Jewish history are encouraged to study its chronological breadth while choosing a geographic area of specialization for coursework and examinations. They may also enroll in a Certificate Program in Jewish Studies (currently in development), which will present them with cross-disciplinary perspectives through coursework and participation in a regular colloquium, the Seminar Series in Jewish Studies, which brings together graduate students and faculty from across the university for intellectual interchange. The Certificate Program will offer students a credential beyond their departmental training that strengthens their ability to compete for national fellowships, postdoctoral awards, and tenure-track positions in Jewish history.

Emory PhD students working in Jewish studies–related fields can expect:

Doctoral Fellowship in International Business History

Overview

The German Historical Institute, Washington, DC, is now accepting applications for a six-month doctoral fellowship in International Business History. A six-month extension of this term is possible. The recipient must begin the term in the summer of 2011.

Preference will be given to fellows whose projects fit into the GHI's research foci on transatlantic relations and the history of consumption. Comparative work is also strongly encouraged.

The fellow will be expected to be in residence at the GHI and participate in GHI activities and events. The fellow will have the opportunity to make use of the resources in the Washington, DC, area, including the Library of Congress and the National Archives, while pursuing his or her own research agenda. Travel within the US to work in archives and libraries will also be possible.


The monthly stipend is €1,700 for doctoral students from European institutions; students based at North American institutions will receive a stipend of $1,900. In addition, fellowship recipients based in Europe will receive reimbursement for their round-trip airfare to the US.

Fellowship Programme of the International Youth Library

Overview

The International Youth Library’s fellowship programme has two primary goals: to support research in the field of international children’s and youth literature and illustration, and to promote academic exchange and international cooperation.

Through the fellowship programme, which has been funded by the Foreign Ministry of the Federal Republic of Germany for 50 years, the International Youth Library would like to encourage comparative research about literature for children and youth in an increasingly networked world. At the same time we would like to encourage the academic use of our international collection of books for children and youth, which spans 400 years.

The International Youth Library offers academic fellowships for up to 12 scholars each year. The length of the stay can range from six weeks to four months. Scholars work on research projects that they have already started in their home countries. In the application, scholars must explain the academic relevancy of the project, and demonstrate that access to the collection of the International Youth Library is necessary for completion of the research project because of insufficient access to needed primary and secondary literature in their home countries. Applications from junior scholars are especially welcome.


The International Youth Library, housed in the late-medieval Blutenburg Castle, boasts the world’s largest collection of international children’s and youth literature. The unique collection includes more than 580,000 children’s and youth books in more than 130 languages, published during the past 400 years. Additionally, there are nearly 30,000 international reference titles, as well as almost 130 current periodicals. The growth of the collection is supported by approximately 1,000 international publishing houses, which regularly donate their latest titles to the International Youth Library.

Fellowship holders work in the reading room of the research library and are supported by staff members in both the content and organizational aspects of their research projects. Our international scholars are invited to take part in our events and to describe their research projects at roundtable discussions. We also assist with the organization of visits to other libraries and research facilities.

Two Postdoctoral Fellows in Environmental Epigenetics

Overview

The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR) has been established at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Copenhagen, to conduct research into basic metabolic functions. The center which consists of five scientific sections and a number of international research satellites was established through a grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The position is in the section for Integrative Physiology headed by Juleen Zierath in the group for Environmental Epigenetics lead by Romain Barres.

Project Description:

Type 2 Diabetes is growing at pandemic rates worldwide, reflecting a synergic interaction between genetic and environmental factors. Epigenetics refers to heritable states of gene expression that are not due to changes in DNA sequence. Two major epigenetic processes, DNA methylation and histone modifications, form the molecular basis of epigenetics, principally by modulating the access of the transcription machinery to the chromatin. Previously, we showed that environmental factors such as diet participate in the etiology of T2D through epigenetic modifications in somatic tissues. The molecular mechanisms involved are yet to be identified. We are seeking two highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellows with excellent skills in molecular biology, biochemistry and cellular biology, to dissect the molecular mechanisms involved in nutrient and exercise-induced epigenetic modifications in metabolic tissues.

The project includes a range of nucleic acid related techniques (DNA and RNA extraction, miRNA cloning, bisulfite sequencing, methylcytosine capture, sequencing, pyrosequencing), cell biology techniques (tissue culture, gene expression, gene silencing, cell imaging) and excellent computing skills (knowledge of databases, design of primers and processing of sequencing results). Candidates with additional background in bioinformatics would be highly regarded.


Selection criteria:
Essential criteria
PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology or related science
Expertise and experience in nucleic acids related techniques and tissue culture
Expertise in any of the following: bisulfite sequencing, generation of miRNA libraries, sequencing, gene transfer or silencing, confocal microscopy
Excellent computing skills related to the processing of sequencing data
Proven track record in nucleic acid research, chromatin structure or regulation of transcription
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Demonstrated capacity for effective team work

Desirable criteria
Previous background in bioinformatics
Knowledge in mammalian physiology and metabolic diseases

Relationships:
The post holders will report to the Leader of the Environmental Epigenetics Group (Romain Barres), the Head of the Integrative Physiology Section (Juleen Zierath) and the Managing Director of CBMR (Anne Stæhr Johansen).
The post holders are expected to interact with staff at all levels, both internally and externally, regarding relevant research topics.

The Centre for Mental Health Research aims to improve the mental health of Australians through research and development, training, policy and the dissemination of health information. To expand the research profile of the Centre, applications from individuals working in epidemiology, e-health, ageing, or health services research would be welcome, although it is not a requirement that the applicant work in one of these areas. Post-Doctoral/Research Fellows in Philosophy at Australian National University

The School of Philosophy, Research School of Social Sciences, Australian National University, seeks to appoint three research-only Postdoctoral/Research Fellows (Level A/B). The Fellows will be appointed in association with projects directed by Professors David Chalmers (on consciousness and related topics) and Daniel Stoljar and Frank Jackson (on philosophical progress).

Two of these positions are associated with the Centre of Consciousness, directed by Professor David Chalmers and one of the positions is associated with the Philosophical Progress grant, just awarded to Professors Frank Jackson and Daniel Stoljar by the ARC.

Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in philosophy or a related discipline prior to appointment, and should specialize in the philosophy of mind or language, metaphilosophy, metaphysics, epistemology, or cognitive science. Appointment will be for up to three years. Master Scholarships in Space Science and Technology

Overview

Erasmus Mundus Master Course in Space Science and Technology – SpaceMaster, 120 ECTS opens opportunities for all highly qualified students around the world to study space science and technology at an advanced level at six excellent European and two leading third-country universities in a research-oriented environment. The educational cooperation is supported by the associated scientific and industrial organisations. This provides direct contacts with professional research and business sectors, including the following associated members:

Selection Criteria

Applicants who fulfill the eligibility requirements will be admitted to the Course.

For the Erasmus Mundus (EM) scholarships the Consortium performs a ranking of all applicants within Category A and B respectively. The first ten applicants from Category A and first seven applicants from Category B with the highest ranks will receive the EM scholarships. Other eligible applicants will be admitted to the Course without the EM scholarship. They will be placed in reserve with the possibility to receive the EM scholarship in case of drop outs of the EM scholarship holders.

For ranking the following criteria are applied:

1.Study credits (academic grades during BSc or equivalent university studies)
2.University position (according to the Consortium internal ranking list)
3.Practical experience, professional capabilities (participation in experiments and project work, internship and trainee job in related and unrelated to the Course areas, other types of employment, available scientific publications if any. Indicate activity and time period)
4.Overseas experience (studies in European universities outside the home country. Indicate university, activity and time period).

The final rank will be calculated on the base of the achieved points using the four criteria. The applicants are encouraged to reflect all their activities in order to receive as high of a rank as possible.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarships

Erasmus Mundus scholarships will be awarded to students and scholars for each of the five Rounds of SpaceMaster beginning 2010-2014. The scholarships are available for EU and non-EU students. The number of scholarships for each Round will be defined by the EU Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA).

- EM scholarship amount for Category A* is 32000 EUR (after deduction of the tuition fees for 2 years) and includes:

contribution to travel, installation and any other type of costs of 8000 EUR for two years of studies;

monthly allowance of 1000 EUR during 22 study months and 2 months internship at a partner university or associate member during the first year

- EM scholarship amount for Category B** is 15000 EUR (after deduction of the tuition fees for 2 years) and includes:

mobility grant of 3000 EUR for travel to a Third Country partner university;
monthly allowance of 500 EUR during 22 study months and 2 months internship at a partner university or associate member during the first year.

Skeptical Theism Fellowships at University of Notre Dame

Overview

The Templeton Research Fellows in Evil and Skeptical Theism will provide one-year awards to up to four applicants, open rank. Fellows will be expected to spend the year in residence at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN, interacting with leading scholars in the philosophy of religion for the purpose of undertaking cutting-edge research on their topics.

The University of Notre Dame provides unique opportunities for sustained contact with scholars in philosophy of religion, theology, and early modern philosophy—contacts which not only can be quite helpful but, in the case of some topics, are the necessary prerequisites for excellent scholarship in the field.

Each successful applicant will receive a total fellowship award of $55,000 to $85,000. Stipend will depend on rank and circumstances of the applicant, and up to $15,000 of each award may be received as reimbursement for travel, re-location, or research-related expenses.


In addition, fellows will have joint access to up to $25,000 to convene a two-day workshop in the late spring of 2012 on the theme of skeptical theism. This workshop will enable fellows to showcase and receive feedback on their work, and promote a broader research agenda on these topics. Fellows will work with the Fellowship Directors to determine the workshop content and schedule, though all the logistical and administrative details will be handled by the Center’s administrative staff. Additional money will be available to invite outside scholars of interest to the fellows for brief visits during their tenure.

The three major components of the Templeton Research Fellows in Evil and Skeptical Theism Program are:

- Performing cutting edge research on skeptical theism and its relevance to the problem of evil.

- Researching the extent to which skeptical theism is plausible, and/or informs our conceptions of the nature and reality of God and evil.

- Utilizing the rich resources that are available at the University of Notre Dame and the Center for Philosophy of Religion.

Each Fellow is expected to complete and disseminate the results of their research through publications, lectures, or presentations at academic conferences within a short time after the end of the fellowship program. Fellows are also expected to submit a report to the Fellowship Directors describing the effects of their time as Fellows on the direction of their research within a year following the fellowship period, and to send the Fellowship Directors notices of presentations, as well as copies of any papers and books resulting from research conducted during the fellowship period.

HSBC Overseas Scholarship Scheme

Overview

The Hongkong Bank Foundation has a long history of supporting educational activities and nurturing young people for the betterment of the community. For the 2011/12 academic year, The Hongkong Bank Foundation is offering the HSBC Overseas Scholarships, at a maximum total value of HK$4,000,000, to selected local full-time undergraduate students. The scholarships will enable the recipients to spend one year of their degree programme at one of the designated overseas universities and return to our University to complete their studies and graduate. The Hong Kong Baptist University will nominate up to two eligible candidates to compete with students from other universities in Hong Kong for the Scholarships.

Each scholarship will cover (1) tuition fees and mandatory college fees, (2) a minimum economy return airfare, and (3) reasonable room and board costs, books, a small portion of living expenses and visa application fees.

ELIGIBILITY

Application is now open to non-final year undergraduate students who are enrolled in a degree programme, and who:

(1) are Hong Kong permanent residents with right of abode in Hong Kong (full disclosure regarding citizenship is required);

(2) are pursuing studies in disciplines under architecture, business and economics, communication, computer science/information systems, construction and land use, dentistry, design, education, engineering, health care, hotel and tourism, law, medicine, science (applied and basic), social sciences, textiles, arts subjects (linguistics & languages, translation, history, geography, fine arts & applied arts) and environment (UGC-funded programmes only). Students are allowed the flexibility to major in a different discipline while abroad;


(3) have attained a cumulative GPA score of 3.3 or above in the first semester of the academic year 2010/2011. Non-first year students should also have attained a cumulative GPA score of 3.3 or above in the academic year 2009/2010;

(4) have applied for admission/have been accepted for admission to one year full-time study at one of the designated overseas universities;

(5) have an appropriate study plan (it is advantageous for the applicants to seek advice from their departments on what courses to take in the designated overseas institutions so that credits gained overseas could be transferred to their studies in the University);

(6) have a minimum total TOEFL score of 90 (Internet-based test) with scores for individual sections not lower than 22 on listening, 17 on writing, 21 on reading, and 21 on speaking; or a minimum IELTS overall band score of 6.5, with no component below 6.0. These are irrespective of overseas universities’ requirements. Please note that the English proficiency tests must be taken on 12 February 2008 or later. If unavailable by the application deadline below, test results can be submitted to the Office of Student Affairs on or before 1 February 2011 (Tuesday);

(7) are well-rounded, participating in extra-curricular and/or community service activities;

(8) have no extensive experience of living or studying overseas;

(9) are in a financial situation which does not permit overseas study or extensive travel overseas; and

(10) are committed to Hong Kong

Scholarship recipients are expected to return to their home universities in Hong Kong after their year overseas to complete their degree in Hong Kong; otherwise, they have to reimburse the full cost of scholarship.

Scholarships will not be awarded to students who enroll in an overseas study course of less than a year or, arranged by HKBU or other organisations, for which financial support for the year abroad is already available either through HKBU or other sources.

Wellcome Trust Doctoral Studentship in the Ethics of Collaborative Global Health Research

The Ethox Centre has been awarded a major Wellcome Trust Enhancement Award to establish an international research network on the ethics of collaborative global health research. The network, which is a joint initiative of the Ethox Centre in Oxford and the Wellcome-KEMRI Unit in Kilifi, Kenya, will build ethics expertise and capacity both in the United Kingdom and in developing countries - with a particular emphasis on building capacity at the Wellcome Trust’s Major Overseas Programme sites. The research activities of the network will focus on five themes: community engagement; global ethics governance; the ethics of research collaboration; the roles and responsibilities of research actors; and challenges in empirical ethics research. The award will fund DPhil studentships, the development of on-line resources, and a range of training activities. The network will also act as a focus for the encouragement of local research initiatives in developing country sites. The network’s Principal Investigator is Professor Michael Parker.

Applications are invited for the third Wellcome Trust studentship to carry out doctoral research on the ethics of collaborative global health research. The studentship will be held at the Ethox Centre, which is a research centre located in the Division of Public Health at the University of Oxford. Overview

Applications are invited for 4 Post-doctoral positions in bio/nanotechnology and material science related research programs. The research activities will take place in the Smart Materials Group of the (CBN), Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) that is based in Lecce, Italy.

The Center possesses world class facilities and expertise in the areas of materials processing and development with emphasis to surface science, nanoparticles production, magnetic, conducting and biocompatible nanocomposites, thermo/mechanical testing, laser spectroscopy, confocal and scanning probe microscopies, biology/biotechnology, genomics/proteomics, third generation photovoltaics, high performance computing, density functional-theory and computational nanoscience. Description of the positions:

Position 1

Two years postdoctoral position in development and thermo/mechanical characterization of novel plastic nanocomposite materials targeting on mechanically reinforced and thermally resistive materials to be used in the areas of buildings and constructions, automotive and aviation industry, packaging. The candidate must have a PhD in one of the following areas: Materials Science, Physics, Engineering. Previous experience in thermo/mechanical characterization of materials will be appreciated.


Position 2

Two years postdoctoral position in the development, processing, chemical modifications and characterization of natural polymers, biopolymers and biocompatible polymers. The candidate must have a PhD in one of the following areas: Chemistry, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Bio Engineering. Previous experience in polymer chemistry is essential, and experience in biopolymers will be highly appreciated.

Position 3

Two years postdoctoral position in surface processing and characterization of materials. The candidate must have a PhD in one of the following areas: Chemistry, Physics, Material Science, Chemical Engineering. Candidates with previous experience in surface patterning (photopatterning, laser ablation, electrochemical patterning, etc.), thin film deposition, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy will be preferred.

Position 4

Two years postdoctoral position in the development and characterization of magnetic and conducting polymer-based nanocomposites. The candidate must have a PhD in one of the following areas: Physics, Material Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering. Overseas Student Scholarships at Lingnan University

Overview

As the only liberal arts university in Hong Kong, Lingnan is committed to the provision of quality education distinguished by the best liberal arts traditions. It adopts a whole-person approach to education which enables its students to think, judge, care and, ultimately, act responsibly in the changing circumstances of Hong Kong, the region and the world.

Overseas Student Scholarships of HK$120,000 (i.e. about US$15,385) each per academic year will be awarded to successful applicants, covering tuition fee, hostel and other academic and living expenses.

Each scholarship is offered on an annual renewable basis and is tenable for a period of up to 3 years, subject to continued outstanding academic performance.

Eligibility

Non-local applicants (other than Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland citizens) should have attained at a recognised post-secondary institution outside Hong Kong an equivalent qualification to the Admission Requirements of the University, as stipulated below:

• a degree, an associate degree or a diploma awarded by a recognised post-secondary institution;
• an International Baccalaureate Diploma;

Edinburgh Legal Education Trust LLM Scholarships

Overview

The scholarship is available for postgraduate research in Scots private law at the University of Edinburgh leading to the degree of LLM by Research (i.e. by a thesis of up to 30.000 words). The subject may be studied in a comparative or historical context. The scholarship is offered by the Edinburgh Legal Education Trust, which was formed in 1996 for the advancement of legal education. The Trustees wish to award a single scholarship for study beginning in September 2011.

Eligibility

The scholarship is open to anyone who, by the start of the LLM programme, holds an honours degree in law, or an ordinary degree in law plus an honours degree in a different discipline and who is accepted by the University of Edinburgh for the degree of LLM by Research (by a thesis of up to 30,000 words). The scholarship is available for postgraduate research in Scots law at the University of Edinburgh leading to the degree of PhD. Research in any area of Scots law, private or public, is eligible for funding, and the subject may be studied in a comparative or historical context. Principal's Career Development Scholarship

Overview

The University of Edinburgh will offer almost 60 PhD scholarships for students starting their PhD research at the University in the 2011-2012 academic session. The awards are open to UK, EU and overseas students undertaking a research degree and may be held in any field of study.

In order to attract the best and brightest PhD students, the University of Edinburgh seeks to offer not only unparalleled research facilities and superb supervision, but also to provide development opportunities which will support our research students as they progress beyond their PhD, through an innovative programme of integrated research, training and career development.

This exciting new scholarship scheme provides a valuable opportunity for postgraduate research students to undertake a package of training and development which will help them to develop the necessary skills required to meet their career choices, and offer them a breadth of development opportunities in areas such as teaching, public engagement, entrepreneurship, and research.


Award

Each scholarship will cover the UK/EU rate of tuition fee (about £3,500 in 2011-2012) as well as a stipend which will increase each year.

In 2011-2012 the level of stipend will be £14,000.

In 2012-2013 this will increase to £14,500, and in year three the level will be £15,000.

Subject to satisfactory progress, the awards are tenable for up to three years

Eligibility

The awards are open to UK, EU and overseas students applying to study for a research degree in 2011-2012. Award applicants should contact the School with whom they intend to study before applying for the award to ascertain whether the funding is available for the discipline involved.

Applicants must have already applied for admission to a full-time PhD research programme of study at the University.

They must be of outstanding academic merit and research potential. Candidates must have, or expect to obtain, a UK first class or 2:1 honours degree at undergraduate level or the international equivalent.

Other factors such as financial status, nationality and the proposed field of study are not taken into account.

The University will not generally consider candidates who have already obtained a PhD, or formal equivalent, as a result of direct research training.

Candidates are required to have good English Language skills with scholarship applicants normally requiring a minimum IELTS of 7.0.

Please also note that if you have applied for consecutive registration where you will start your Master's programme of study in 2011 and your PhD the following year in 2012, that you will not be eligible to apply for a Principal's Career Development Scholarship in 2011. Principal's awards cannot be held concurrently with fully-funded scholarships but can be held with partial awards such as Scottish Overseas Research Students Award Scheme (SORSAS) awards.

Scottish Overseas Research Students Award Scheme

Overview

This award is designed to attract high quality overseas research students to Scottish universities.

Each award covers the difference between the tuition fee for a UK/EU graduate student and that chargeable to an overseas graduate student. The awards do not cover maintenance expenses.

Subject to satisfactory progress, the awards are tenable for up to three years.

All candidates who apply for a Scottish Overseas Research Students Award Scheme (SORSAS) award and are unsuccessful, will automatically be considered for an Edinburgh Global Research Scholarship.

The University of Edinburgh will award 30 Edinburgh Global Research Scholarships in session 2011-2012 which like the SORSAS Awards will cover the difference between the overseas rate of fee and the home rate of fee.

Eligibility

The awards are open to overseas students undertaking a research degree and may be held in any field of study.

Applicants must be liable to pay tuition fees at the rate applicable to overseas students and must have already applied for admission to a full-time PhD research programme of study or currently be pursuing such a programme.


Academic merit

Applicants must be of outstanding academic merit and research potential.

Although candidates with an upper second class honours Bachelor's degree (or the overseas equivalent) can be considered, in order to be competitive you should really have a first class Bachelor's degree supplemented by an excellent Master's degree.

Other factors such as financial status, nationality and the proposed field of study are not taken into account.

Excluding factors

The University of Edinburgh will not generally consider candidates who have already obtained a PhD, or formal equivalent, as a result of direct research training; or who are due to enter the third year of their PhD programme of study.

Please also note that if you have applied for consecutive registration where you will start your Master's programme of study in 2011 and your PhD the following year in 2012, that you will not be eligible to apply for an SORSAS award in 2011.

SORSAS awards cannot be held concurrently with fully-funded scholarships such as a Commonwealth Scholarship, or a Marshall Scholarship.

Africa LLM/MSc Tercentenary Scholarship

Overview

The Africa LLM/MSc Tercentenary Scholarship is open to all African students applying for the LLMs in Law; Commercial Law; European Law; Innovation, Technology and the Law; International Law; Global Environment and Climate Change Law; Intellectual Property Law and also the MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice.

One scholarship will be available each academic year until 2013/2014.

The award is open to all suitably qualified African applicants; however, the 2011/2012 scholarship is particularly aimed at applicants who are citizens of (and normally resident in) Eastern and Central Africa, including Zambia, Ethiopia, Malawi, DR Congo, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Somalia. If no suitable application is received from these countries, the scholarship will pass to the next most suitable applicant. The award will be made solely on academic merit.

The scholarship will cover the costs of postgraduate tuition fees for one academic year. The successful applicant will also be given a partial maintenance grant (£6500) to help fund their studies at the University of Edinburgh. The maintenance grant will not cover the full costs of studying at the university and applicants should ensure they have sufficient financial support to complete their studies.

China Scholarships Council/University of Edinburgh Scholarships

Overview

Up to twenty scholarships will be available for PhD study to candidates who are citizens and permanent residents of the People's Republic of China at the time of applying for entry for the academic year 2011-2012.

Candidates should have satisfied all English language requirements and have received an offer of admission from the University of Edinburgh to study on a full-time PhD degree programme by the time the University puts forward their list of endorsed applications (Tuesday 1 March 2011).

The scholarships are available for study in the following areas of study:

■ Communication and Information Technology
■ Agriculture
■ Life Sciences and Public Health
■ Materials Science and New Materials
■ Energy and the Environment
■ Engineering
■ Applied Social Science and WTO-related areas
■ Business and Law
■ Mathematics

While the above academic areas are the priority areas as specified by the Chinese Ministry, applicants to other research areas will also be considered.

For successful applicants, the University will provide scholarships to cover tuition fees for up to 20 students, and CSC will consider their application for a living allowance as prescribed from time to time by the Chinese Government (which includes Student Health cover), a return airfare from China to the UK by the most economical route, and visa application fees.

The scholarships will be awarded to citizens and permanent residents of the People's Republic of China at the time of application who are accepted for admission on a full-time basis for a postgraduate PhD degree programme at the University of Edinburgh.
