Cambodia: East West Center - Partnership for Youth (P4Y) Cambodia: Reporting for Change

Overview

The East-West Center is now accepting applications from U.S. high school sophomores and juniors for the 2010 Partnership for Youth (P4Y) Program. Offering a unique, structured learning experience in Cambodia, P4Y aims to foster global knowledge and cross-cultural connections, while also developing students’ academic and personal transferable skills, including media literacy, critical thinking, leadership, problem-solving, and intercultural as well as interpersonal communication skills.

Focusing on “Reporting for Change,” the 2010 program will use the Khmer Rouge Tribunal (KRT) in Cambodia as a case study for analysis of the public understanding and perceptions (at both local and international levels) of the Khmer Rouge period (1975-1979), the ongoing trials of former Khmer Rouge leaders, and issues of transitional justice. The program will also examine the role of the media in shaping public opinions among Cambodians – particularly the youth – about the legacies of the Khmer Rouge era and interrelated issues of history, memory, reconciliation, and national development.

The program will begin in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, where participants will be met on arrival at the airport by East-West Center staff. All participants should arrange to arrive in Phnom Penh on July 1 and depart from Phnom Penh on July 25.

P4Y is a program of the East-West Center, an internationally recognized research and educational organization based in Honolulu, Hawaii. Established by the U.S. Congress in 1960, the EWC works to strengthen understanding and relations between the United States and the countries of Asia and the Pacific. Its Education and Research programs are multinational and collaborative in nature, provide rigorous and critical analysis of key issues of common concern to the region and the United States and involve, and foster partnerships that address significant, real world problems.

The East-West Center’s AsiaPacificEd Program draws on the Center’s Asia Pacific expertise, unsurpassed networks, and extensive K-12 experience to provide teachers and high school youth with high quality, innovative global learning opportunities in the Asia Pacific region. Participants and others have hailed AsiaPacificEd programs for engendering transformative learning.

Cost

The program fee of $1,690 includes hotels, two meals a day, all program-related transportation in Cambodia, visits to cultural/historic sites accompanied by knowledgeable English-speaking tour guides and interpreters, special seminar sessions, events, and workshops, including shadow puppet lessons, and program readings and materials. Also included is a weeklong homestay visit with an English-speaking local family and a unique opportunity to learn from and work alongside Buddhist monks as they take part in a service-learning project at a school for disadvantaged children. Each participant will also receive a certificate of completion along with a printed copy of the photo and narrative journal chronicling their in-country experiences and activities.

Participants are responsible for travel to/from Phnom Penh (where they will be met on arrival at the airport by EWC program staff), Cambodia visa ($25 on arrival in Cambodia), airport departure tax (under $30), and their passports.
