UK: PhD Studentship in Mechanical Damage and Explosive Hazard, University of Cambridge

Overview

UK: PhD Studentship in Mechanical Damage and Explosive Hazard, University of Cambridge under supervisor - Dr. W. Allison/ Dr. D. M. Williamson, Dept of Physics, Cavendish Laboratory

There is a need to be able to predict the hazard response of energetic materials such as propellants and polymer bonded explosives. This is necessary to evaluate effective quantities for storage purposes and to understand what the probable outcomes are in an accident or threat scenario.

A prerequisite to hazard response is a detailed description of the thermo-mechanical properties of the materials under consideration. Such a description should be dependant on temperature, pressure, strain, strain-rate and damage condition.

This experimental research project will undertake a physics-based approach to the problem. A series of research compositions have been specially formulated. These materials have very tight tolerances in terms of their make-up, material history and traceability. The successful student will be required to measure the thermal andmechanical properties of each of these compositions using a wide range of experimental techniques and diagnostics.

Responsibility

The student will be expected to liaise closely with an industrial partner who will provide physics based modelling and simulation support.

The successful student will join the Fracture and Shock Physics Group at the Cavendish Laboratory. The group has an international reputation in the area of shock physics, explosives characterisation and high-speed diagnostics.

Studentship Value

This project is supported by QinetiQ, and due to funding restrictions, only candidates from the UK or EU are eligible for full support, with the current tax-free maintenance stipend being up to 16,000 per year.

Eligibility

Applicants should hold a First or Upper-Second degree in physics, chemistry, engineering, material science or a related subject, and in addition an aptitude for experimental work is essential.

Application deadline: 12 December 2009
