Overview
Our prestigious 4-year Engineering Doctorate (EngD) programme in Environmental Technology is sponsored by the EPSRC. The programme offers environmentally focussed research, in an industrial setting, along with personal and professional development to research engineers whilst they study towards their Doctorate.
Research Project: Integrated Gasification Fuel Cell (IGFC) Combined Cycle technology for decentralized power and heat/cooling supply for buildings
The proposed research project aims to develop fuel cell technology in combination with a gas turbine (GT) as stationary and flexible Tri-generation unit to supply the electrical and heating/cooling needs of large buildings. The system is an integrated gasification fuel cell combined-cycle configuration (operating on syngas produced by solid fuel) that provides high system efficiencies and ultra-low pollution levels. A dynamic model of the IGFC system and the parametric investigations of its use applied to the electricity and heating/cooling loads of large building will be developed.
Energy and the environment is a strong research area in the School of Engineering and Design at Brunel University, with current activities covering the distributed generation of energy through to the efficient utilisation of energy and the use of renewable resources. In particular there is research currently being carried out into emerging fuels and power technologies such as hydrogen and fuel cells.
Entry Requirements
Candidates should have a minimum of an upper second (2:1) class honours degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Chemical engineering or related engineering disciplines or an MSc in sustainable energy engineering. They should have strong interest in the project and be able to demonstrate an aptitude for undertaking this type of research. The ideal candidate will have experience in built integrated energy system design (Fuel Cell/Gas Turbine coupling system), electrochemical process and experimental research, and have a good theoretical and practical knowledge of energy systems thermodynamics. Experience with relevant computer simulation software and techniques such as Computational Fluid Dynamics, Simulink and TRNSYS dynamic process modelling would be an advantage.
Scholarship circa £19,200
Eligibility for Application
The studentship is subject to the EPSRC rules for eligibility, see: http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/PostgraduateTraining/StudentEligibility.htm, which state that only UK and EU nationals who have resided in the UK for three years immediately prior to the start of the programme are eligible for support.
