Hungary: Medieval Studies, Central European University, Budapest

Overview

Now is the time for students to apply to the CEU Department of Medieval Studies. Central European University is an American- and Hungarian-accredited university offering MA and PhD degrees located in Budapest. The faculty is recruited internationally; the language of instruction is English.

The Department of Medieval Studies is a prominent center for interdisciplinary studies of late antique, Western, Central and East European, Byzantine, Islamic, and Ottoman cultures (ca. A.D. 300-1550). Students undertake research on historical, art historical, philological, philosophical, archaeological and other topics. The department is strong in its offerings of classical languages (Latin, Greek, Old Church Slavonic), plus other languages such as Arabic. The interdisciplinary and international character of the Medieval Studies Department creates a unique scholarly environment for which our rapidly growing international reputation and wide network of alumni/ae testify.

Program and Financial Aid

We offer three post-graduate degrees: One-Year MA, Two-Year MA, and PhD. Financial aid is available for all programs and a free TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exam is organized once a year. Our PhD and Two-Year MA degrees are accredited both in the US (Middle States Commission on Higher Education, one of the six most important accrediting agencies in the US) and in Hungary. The One-Year MA degree is accredited in the US (Middle States Commission on Higher Education, one of the six most important accrediting agencies in the US).

How to apply

It is easy to apply on-line at the university website (http://www.ceu.hu/admissions). If you have questions about the application procedure itself, you may contact our departmental coordinators: Annabella Pál for One-Year MA program (palannab@ceu.hu), Agnes Bendik for Two-Year MA program (bendika@ceu.hu), and Csilla Dobos for the PhD program (dobos@ceu.hu).

You are also welcome to write to any faculty member for advice on the application essay that the department requires. All this information is available on the departmental website (http://medstud.ceu.hu).

Application Deadline

The application deadline for students who wish to take the CEU-organized TOEFL is January 25, 2010. The TOEFL exams are given in each country of the region in March; consult the website (http://www.ceu.hu/admissions/contacts/localreps) for information concerning your country. March 16, 2010, is the deadline for submitting complete application packages (if the CEU TOEFL score is not needed) for all programs.

We welcome young scholars from throughout the world who wish to pursue research on topics that connect with the profile of our department. We ask your assistance in spreading our letter to your students who might be interested in our program.
