Overview
Department of Mathematics of Royal Holloway, University of London
invites applications for a three year PhD studentship in applied Statistics and Probability Theory, starting as soon as possible but no later than September 2010. Potential projects concern i) cancer diagnosis and treatment using innovative imaging technologies and statistical and machine learning, ii) diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging, iii) computational biology, iv) image analysis. Projects with a stronger theoretical component could also involve v) new approaches to inference in hidden Markov models and more general stochastic processes, and vi) invariance and symmetry in statistical models.
Eligibility requirement
Applicants should have, or expect to receive, a first or upper second class degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or a closely related subject.
Funding
The studentship is fully funded, including a stipend of £13,250 per year, for UK and EU nationals.
While a successful applicant from outside EU would still be liable for the difference in tuition fees (approximately £8,000 per year), the Department will continue to seek additional funding to help such a candidate cover this difference.
Enquiries
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr A. Koloydenko, Alexey.Koloydenko@rhul.ac.uk. Further details of the projects and application procedure are available at: https://www.ma.rhul.ac.uk/statistics.
Applications Deadline 5th February 2010
