UNESCO/Aschberg Bursary Program, Brazil

Overview

Two bursaries to the Instituto Sacatar are awarded annually through the UNESCO/Aschberg bursary program, one for a visual artist and one for a musician/composer. These bursaries are restricted to artists from 25 to 35 years old, born and living in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Russia, the former Soviet Republics, Australia, New Zealand and/or the Pacific Islands.

A UNESCO/Aschberg bursary to the Instituto Sacatar provides artists the time and space to produce new work and to interact with the dynamic culture of Bahia. Specifically, the bursary provides:

•roundtrip airfare between the artist’s nearest international airport and Salvador, Brazil;
•a two-month stay (October 24 - December 19, 2011) at the Sacatar estate on the island of Itaparica, including:
◦a room with private bath;
◦a separate studio;
◦all meals (except Saturday evenings, Sundays and holidays);
◦laundry service;
◦logistical support for the execution of the artist’s intentions.

There is no additional stipend; the artist is responsible for his or her own working materials and any personal expenses (local transportation, incidental meals, etc.) for the duration of the residency.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Applications for the UNESCO/Aschberg Bursaries may be submitted electronically or by air mail, except for work samples that include moving imagery or sound (SEE BELOW) which must be sent by regular air mail. All materials submitted electronically and by air mail MUST ARRIVE in Itaparica, Bahia, Brazil, on or before Monday, November 22, 2010.

Applications must include:

1.Completed application form (available as a download): Please be sure to include both the name you commonly use and your name as it appears on your passport. Regarding the question Why Bahia?: in fifty words or less, please state why this opportunity to work in Bahia, Brazil, is of interest to you and what you think you could do in the cultural milieu of Bahia that you could not do in another residency setting. The application form requests that you include the names, job titles, emails and phone numbers of two references with whom we can discuss your application. The references must be able to communicate in either English or Portuguese.

2.Professional resumé (curriculum vitae), including significant achievements, awards, residencies, etc.

3.Description of the project you expect to work on while a resident at the Instituto Sacatar. We strive to provide excellent conditions for solo work, but we also seek to facilitate work with entities and organizations in the local community. If you have a specific community-oriented idea, please explain. Feel free to state alternative plans of action. Remember that once in Bahia, things may change. Flexibility and improvisation are essential.

4.Description of physical work needs: equipment, space, furniture, etc. If during the creative process you use sound, please let us know how that sound might be controlled so that it does not disturb the other artists in residents.

5.Samples of recent representative work: Work samples should be submitted electronically as .jpg’s (800 x 600 pixels max.), except for any work samples that involve a moving image and/or sound. These must be submitted as CDs or DVDs. For details, please refer to WORK SAMPLES below. Submit all materials (except moving imagery and/or sound recordings) electronically to:

SELECTION PROCESS

A selection committee, convened by Sacatar, will evaluate the work samples and proposals of all applicants and will recommend up to eight individuals for subsequent interviews. Sacatar will conduct interviews by telephone, in English or Portuguese, with these selected artists between December 6 and December 11, 2010. The purpose of the interviews is to understand in greater depth the artist’s expectations and intentions and to clarify for the applicant what Sacatar can and cannot offer. Sacatar will then nominate six artists for the two UNESCO/Aschberg Bursaries. The final selection of the two bursary recipients will be made by the UNESCO/Aschberg committee in Paris, France, and will be announced in early January 2011. The residencies will take place from 24 October to 19 December 2011.

If you have any specific questions about eligibility, the application requirements, the selection process or any other issue associated with the UNESCO/Aschberg Bursaries to the Instituto Sacatar, please write to us at info@sacatar.org.
