Research Assistant: ‘Creative Practice in Contemporary Concert Music’
A project of the AHRC Research Centre for Musical Performance as
Creative Practice
Salary: £28,983 p.a. (University Grade 7.1)
Fixed-term for three years: 1 March 2011 – 28 February 2014
The Faculty of Music seeks to appoint a postdoctoral research assistant with effect from 1 March 2011. This appointment is full-time for a fixed-term of three years. The postholder will work with Professor Eric Clarke (University of Oxford), and will also interact with associated project leaders and other members of the AHRC Research Centre for Musical Performance as Creative Practice (CMPCP), a research initiative hosted by the Faculty of Music at the University of Cambridge, with an overall budget of ca. £2.1 million, and involving Oxford, King’s College London, and Royal Holloway, University of London as partner institutions. The Centre features five large-scale research projects, four of which involve workshop packages. The postholder will contribute specifically to the project ‘Creative Practice in Contemporary Concert Music’, directed by Professor Clarke, and carried out in association with composers and performers at a number of linked institutions.
The CMPCP is addressing such questions as:
• How is musical performance creative, and what knowledge is creatively embodied in musical performance?
• How does music in performance – and the act of performance – take shape over time?
• How does understanding musical performance as a creative practice vary across different global contexts, idioms and performance conditions (such as solo and ensemble, in the rehearsal room, recording studio and concert hall)?
• In what ways is creativity distributed across the conventional categories of composition, performance and improvisation?
To participate in the ‘Creative Practice in Contemporary Concert Music’ research project in line with the objectives defined in the project description. The Research Assistant will:
(1) Take primary responsibility for a thorough survey of the literature on post-WWII writing on
composer/performer collaborations, and on collaborative composition/improvisation more generally; (2) Collect and analyse qualitative and quantitative data from composer/performer/
improviser interactions (including interviews, diaries, performance data); (3) Help to organize
and run workshops; (4) Take an active role in authoring and/or preparing publications;
(5) Take an active role in presenting at workshops and conferences.
Selection criteria
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
ESSENTIAL
• PhD in music or psychology
• Experience of the design and execution of empirical investigations in music using a range of methods (qualitative and quantitative)
• Experience of carrying out interview/observational studies
• Competence in a range of data-analysis methods (including statistical methods)
• Familiarity with software for sound editing and analysis
• Good interpersonal skills
• Excellent spoken and written English
• An ability to act on your own initiative and work without close supervision
• An ability to work well in a team
• Good organisational ability
• Willingness to report frequently and fully on work in progress, orally and in writing
DESIRABLE
• Publications (accepted or already in print)
• Training/experience as a musical performer
• Knowledge of MIDI data
• Experience of working with professional performers/composers/improvisers
