Overview
The commercial buildings sector spends over $900 million per year on energy, accounting for 9% of New Zealand’s energy and 20% of electricity use. It is responsible directly for 4% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions which, since 1990, have grown in absolute terms by 26%, this is 60% faster per year than those produced by the agriculture sector. In the commercial sector 54% of fuel usage is electricity, making it vulnerable to supply and transmission problems as well as future carbon costs and supply.
Understanding how energy and water resources are used in today’s commercial buildings will make it possible to use them more efficiency and so enhance New Zealand’s sustainability. An efficiency improvement of 10% would give $90 million fuel and at least $2 million direct GHG savings per year, plus benefits from reduced electricity demand.
Over the next six years Building Energy Enduse Study (BEES) will make the first step toward these efficiency improvements by establishing where and how resources are used, and the determinants of resource use.
Victoria University and the Building Research Association of New Zealand (BRANZ) invite applications from Honours, PhD and Masters level students who wish to carry out research that will assist in developing a holistic understanding of the relationships between energy and resource use, building type and use as well as the opportunities to improve energy and resource efficiency of commercial buildings in New Zealand.
Scholarship Value
PhD Scholarships are valued at $20,000 per annum for three years plus tuition fees.
Masters (by thesis) Scholarships are valued at $15,000 for one year plus domestic tuition fees.
Honours Scholarships are valued at $5,000
Costs directly related to the research programme may also be supported.
Criteria
These postgraduate scholarships will be awarded to candidates specialising in any areas of Building Science, Architecture, Mathematics or Statistics, Social Science or Engineering who feels that they can contribute to research into the areas outlined above. Selection will be based on academic merit and the relevance of the intended research project to the objectives of the Building Energy Enduse Study.
