Overview
The opening is for a position at the Amsterdam Center for International Law (ACIL), one of the centres of excellence of the University of Amsterdam.
The postdoctoral researcher will work within the project ‘Framing and Taming Post-National Rulemaking: Views from Public International Law, European Public Law, and European Private Law' jointly led by Professor Deirdre Curtin, Professor Martijn Hesselink and Professor André Nollkaemper. The project aims to provide new reflections and insights into the discussion on the legitimacy of post-national rulemaking starting from three distinct but in this project uniquely combined legal perspectives: public international law, European public law and European private law.
The postdoc will work on public international law aspects of the topic. These relate in particular to rule-making in the framework of international institutions, whether informal institutions or formal international organizations. The central focus of the project is on questions of legitimacy and accountability that are raised by the growing importance of such rule-making.
The postdoc will work on the theoretical and conceptual aspects of the phenomenon of ‘post-national rule-making', in particular in the framework of international institutions. She/he would place the phenomenon against the backdrop of the debates on the law of international organizations, including the responsibility of international organizations, global administrative law and the 'publicness' of international law, as well as the soft law-debate. Themes that may be examined include the distinction between law and non-law in the context of decisions of international institutions, problems of measuring and understanding the impact of decisions of international institutions, accountability and responsibility of international institutions for decisions that violate either internal rules or general international law, and the consequences of decisions of international institutions for the international rule of law.
Tasks
■Conducting postdoctoral research for the project, as part of the research group established for this project
■Contributing to the overall coordination and direction of the project
■Supervision of PhD candidates within the project
■Possibly teaching of courses on public international law, related to the project

■Ideally the successful candidate will have some knowledge of European public law and European private law
