PhD position in Systems and Control at Uppsala University

Overview

The research group Systems and Control in the department of Information Technology of Uppsala University (Sweden) (http://www.it.uu.se/research/syscon) invites applications for a Ph.D. studentship. The successful applicant will work in the context of the ERC project on control engineering and modeling for biomedical systems. Especially motivated students with a strong background in engineering, computer science, applied mathematics or alike are encouraged to apply. This research will be conducted under supervision of Alexander Medvedev and Petre Stoica.

In this Ph.D. project we will explore different approaches to unravel complex interaction networks as observed in dynamical systems of the human body, especially with respect to endocrinology and neurology. As classical modeling tools are often not satisfactory for modeling of biological signals, ample room for improvement and further exploration of either theoretical or applied research remains in this area.

The applicant will work in the framework of a larger cooperation with different medical teams, and work towards a practical solution based on a sound theoretical foundation. In order to obtain this, we will combine the best of such exciting research areas as system identification, machine learning, signal processing, theoretical computer science, flavored with a healthy engineering perspective.

A Ph.D. student position requires a Master of Science in Engineering Sciences or Applied Mathematics, or equivalent in a field that is relevant for the topic of the Ph.D. thesis. The position is for a maximum of five years and includes departmental duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching). Further information: http://www.teknat.uu.se/ and http://www.it.uu.se/. Uppsala University is striving to achieve a more even gender balance among its staff and women are especially encouraged to apply.

Applications must include a brief description in English of research interests and past experience that are relevant to the thesis topic, a CV, copies and translations (into English) of diplomas and transcripts, a copy/abstract of the Master thesis, other relevant documents, as well as the earliest feasible starting date of employment. Candidates must provide contact information to at least three referees, but no actual reference letters.
