Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Research Fellowship Scheme

Overview

Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) offers annually a number of Research Fellowships for research on Brunei topics, preferably at post‐doctoral level, which can contribute to the national development of Brunei Darussalam. Tenable at Universiti Brunei Darussalam, the Fellowship will be granted subject to the following terms and conditions:

1. Eligibility

Candidates must be academics or researchers with a proven record of research and publications.

2. Tenure of Fellowship

The Fellowship shall be tenable for a period of twelve (12) months and may be renewed up to an additional twelve (12) months subject to approval of the Vice Chancellor or his/her nominee and subject to satisfactory progress in the research undertaken and the terms and conditions specified herein.

3. Monthly Allowance

The Fellowship carries with it a monthly allowance of B$3000 payable in arrears at the end of each month.

The Fellow is required to meet the cost of local travel and other expenses connected with the research undertaken from the allowance.


In special cases, a Fellow may after arrival in Brunei Darussalam, apply to the UBD Research Committee for a grant to meet expenses to be incurred in connection with the approved research.

4. Medical Fitness

The Fellow must be certified medically fit to undertake the approved research. The Fellow and the immediate family, if accompanying the Fellow, will also be required to undergo a medical check‐up by a Government doctor after arrival in Brunei Darussalam.

5. Visa

The grant of the Fellowship is conditional upon the Fellow being issued with a visa or permits to enter Brunei Darussalam to undertake the approved research.

6. Accommodation

The Fellow will be provided with accommodation at the University’s Visiting Lecturers Quarters (VLQ) at a rate of $45 per day. In circumstances where the VLQ is not available, appropriate housing will be provided off‐campus at an equivalent rate.

On satisfactory completion of the Fellowship, a fellow may continue to occupy the accommodation for up to one week (or for two nights if put in a hotel) immediately prior to departure from Brunei Darussalam.

7. Medical Care

Medical and dental treatment will be made available at the General Hospital for the Fellow and accompanying spouse and dependent children (not exceeding 18 years of age), subject to payment of a small registration fee for each visit.

8. Vacation Leave

A Fellow shall be eligible for the grant of vacation leave at a pro rate of 2 days per month. This is in addition to the weekly days of rest (Fridays and Sundays) and public holidays. Days of rest and public holidays falling within a period of vacation leave taken shall be counted as days of vacation leave taken. Except for sick leave granted by a government doctor, no other type of leave will be granted.

The prior written permission of the Registrar and Secretary must be obtained to leave Brunei Darussalam during the tenure of the Fellowship.

9. Passages

a) The University will provide the fellow, if recruited from overseas, with air passage by the most economical class and most direct route as indicated below at the commencement and on satisfactory completion of the Fellowship periods:

i. For the Fellow only if the period of the Fellowship is less than twelve (12) months; or

ii. For the Fellow and the spouse if the initial period of the fellowship is twelve (12) months.
For the purpose of this sub‐paragraph, the period of the Fellowship will count from the date of the Fellow’s arrival in Brunei Darussalam up to the date of expiry of the Fellowship, not including any period of extension which may be granted later.

b) Air passages will be granted subject to the following conditions:

i. at the commencement of the Fellowship, from the airport nearest to the Fellow’s current place of residence or place of domicile to Bandar Seri Begawan as may be determined by UBD and notified in the Letter of Offer of the Fellowship;
ii. at the end of the Fellowship, from Bandar Seri Begawan to the Fellow’s place of residence or place of domicile to be determined by the University;

iii. the grant of passages, including that granted to the spouse if applicable, must be availed of within one month from the date of issue of air tickets at the commencement or end of the
Fellowship, as the case may be, failing which it shall be deemed as having lapsed; and
iv. such other provisions as are set out in these Terms and Conditions.

c) If the duration of the Fellowship is shortened for whatever reason or circumstance, the Fellow will not be provided with air passages to return home. However, under special circumstances, the Fellow and the spouse may be provided with a one‐way air passage to return to his/her place of residence if the Assistant Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation) is satisfied with the reasons for shortening the Fellowship period.

10. Office and Bench Space and Other Facilities.

The Fellow may be provided with the necessary office and bench space for his/her research and access to other facilities, subject to availability and where applicable, e.g. laboratory, library and computer facilities.
