English Language Specialist Program for American Students/Citizens

Overview

The English Language Specialist Program recruits U.S. academics in the fields of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) / Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) and Applied Linguistics for short-term (two to four weeks) assignments abroad. Specialists work on well-defined assignments overseas that are identified by U.S. Embassies. These assignments may include curriculum projects, teacher training seminars, textbook development, English for Specific Purposes, and program evaluation. In some cases, specialists located in the United States consult with institutions abroad through teleconferences, digital video conferences, or webinars. In many cases, Embassy officials will suggest a candidate; if not, the Office of English Language Programs recruits a specialist.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to serve as an English Language Specialist, you must meet the following requirements:

- United States Citizen
- MA or Ph.D. (TESL/TEFL or applied linguistics)
- Overseas experience
- Teacher training experience

Program Benefits

Benefits of the English Language Specialist Program include an honorarium of $200 per day, a coach-class round trip airfare from the Specialist's residence to the capital city, a books and materials allowance of $150 as well as a $100 allowance for miscellaneous expenses, basic health care insurance coverage, a paid trip report fee of $100, and an entrance visa (if required). Travel and per diems are arranged jointly through the Office of English Language Programs and the requesting embassy overseas.

How to Become a Specialist

E-mail your current C.V. to english@state.gov with the following information:

- Full name;
- Position/title;
- Institutional address, telephone, email;
- Home address, telephone, email;
- If applicable, previous U.S. Department of State grants (from the last 3 years);
- Overseas experience;
- List of topics you are prepared to speak on.

How To Request a Specialist

All requests for English Language Specialists must come to the Office of English Language Programs from officers at U.S. Embassies overseas. Institutions not in the United States who are interested in having a Specialist for 2-4 weeks or a speaker for a shorter term must work with the Public Diplomacy Officer or Cultural Officer at the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate and submit all requests for Specialists to them. If they agree to the request, the Embassy will then send an official request to the Office of English Language Programs in Washington, D.C.

For standard two to four week specialist programs, the Office of English Language Programs will provide funds for the Specialist's travel, honorarium, and materials allowance, but per diem (food and housing) for the Specialist must be provided by the host institution and/or the U.S. Embassy submitting the request. When a U.S. Embassy requests a speaker for a program shorter than two weeks, the Embassy must also fund the international travel.
